Gents, I'm looking to get into game fishing and want to buy 4 setups to target marlin and tuna out of Auckland and up the east coast. I don't have a game chair so it will be all standup, out of a Genesis 400 targa. Can I get some opinions please on 50w, 80w or Talica 50? Also bent Butt or straight? Any advice would be gold, thanks.

Having had 80s,50s a 30w a talica 50 and a 20 my current thinking is tiagra 50a is the way to go - 950m of braid and a 50 - 100m topshot . Very reasonably priced reel as well , about $670 .

That's a very good idea, I have a similar set-up with a 50S international. Heaps of line capacity and easy to handle.

there is lots of talk about Talica, Rachets not being very loud. You don't need anything more sophisticated than an International or tiagra for trolling, and they have nice loud rachets.

I totally agree with Legacy and Bigfishbob, from what I have seen in hear for repairs lately Sorry I do not rate the Talica 50 reels, much better with Tiagra 50 or Penn 50 , built to last and nice loud clickers,
both hold 900 m of holllow braid and mono top shot of your choice , anyway time will tell, good luck out there guys, Merry Xmas SwordfishsteveSmile

lol some pretty all power full people going for the  50 wides

what about the new narrow spool penns Thumbs Up i love the narrow spool concept  for ease of keeping an even spool  especially with braid

remember if u go 80 lb orb 130lb braid you are going to need   at least  80 lb stand up rods

and i believe  with stand up bent butts are the way to go with rods

what ever u do  80 or 130 line weight is the way to go don't play round trying to be a trout fishing man playing with light weight silly string

Not sure about being powerful, but I was was talking about 50 narrow spools, that's what a 50S is. Smile

lets say people who should know what  they are talking about ,

i have my ideas of the perfect stand up outfit

its bent butt  top line  rod   and penn 50s

until the penn 50s is proven otherwise , ??????

loaded up with top grade 130 ib , hollow core

   i
always try to keep an open mind

question, does the penn  50s  hold more  braid than the shimano talica 50

ok reels and line out of the way

 RODS

bent butt stand up  with rollers or eyes

 then the question is

is it an eye or a roller on the tip

me  i am not a fan of rollers, so would love to try out a quality  rod with top of the line  eyes all the way ??? i do twist to a roller tip a wee bit lol

i see  im our fair country , both shimano and penns top end stuff is rollers  with there second line  being eyes and roller tipped

I have built all mine with Rollers about 10-15 years ago. These days a lot of people use Silicone carbonite or ceramic guides and roller tips, I'd do the same if I built any more rods. Roller tips are good for prevent line wear from trolling due to tip wiggle.

All my Rods have straight buts, but can see the benefits of bent butts for deep fishing like broad bill, and also keeping the tips of corner rods low. I'd stay with Straight butts. I also make the butts on my rods really short as well, 10-11" from edge of reel seat to the end of the gimbal. keeps the reel low which I find helpful.

yes on the thinking and looking at the talicas  combo of 50 and the 25  is  a interesting combo

i do love the talicas  but the penns are the new kid  and i would like to have a play with the penns and the talicas Clap

i have no idea as i have no working knowledge of the talicas   but maybe the clickers are not to hot ,   but steve does like his pennsLOL

anyway as i have not seen a penn 50s yet, but my reasoning on very rough numbers was i seemed  to think the new penn had more line capacity  than the talica  maybe a 100 or 150 or  so , my numbers may  be wrong

thanks for that bigfishbob   i believe if you can the guides are the way to go  with top end blanks and roller tip

My20 year old Duel 6/0 2 speed is still my favourite even though the handle isn't as ergonometric as the newer handles. Recently serviced by sworfishsteve)
Takes 1000 metres of 80 lb Tasline hollow.
That reverse wind  low-speed is still magic on a tough fight!
I also have  CD + Killwell 37 kg rods and have both straight and bent butts (but not interchangeable.
Anyone still using 15 kg??

What have you seen and heard re repairs there steve?

You of all people know I have seen and serviced 100's and I can with 100 percent truth that I havent seen or heard any faults what so ever. Including Tony Ortons charter reels and a few mates of mine that have caught 20+ marlin on the one reel last season. Also dealt to some sword fish with no need of any parts replacement. In fact the only issue I have had with a Talica 50 is due to someone pulling it apart that had no idea what they were doing and damaged the fins on the anti reverse when they attempted to put it back together. Then made a song and dance about it.

From a service point of view - I rate them extremely highly, They do not have as loud a clicker as a Tiagra that is fact. But it is loud enough to hear,
Its a different design that is fact.

Everything else I seem to be reading re Talica 50s is hearsay

They are a perfect reel for filling with hollow braid and top shotting, for marlin / tuna / swords or fishing 15kg. I troll with mine and I can definitely hear the clicker no problem at all even when cranking the sounds.

But to answer your question All options you are looking at will be suitable and it will come down to personal preference, I run a set of talica 50s filled with 80lb hollowcore power pro braid, top shotted with 24kg. I also have a set of tiagra 30ws And both are perfect for what I wanted to do. Light and easy to handle,

Disclaimer - I was the Shimano service manager for 7 years

Cheers
I'll act my age when im 69

non that stand out the reel maintenance guys  on here say they are sweet as ,   except the clicker may or not be as load as the tiagras
which what i think have heard before

so for the gent that started this post  buy talica 50s
i would load with 130 , or 80 lb  braid and top shot with a 100 or 50 meters of  130 or 80 lb  mono ,  but mono is fine   ordo what the shimano  bloke says buy 2 talicas and 2 tiagra 30s or 50 wides  always buy twin speeds
