Anyone who has spent a day on a hot alloy chequerplate or teak deck will appreciate the advantages of having a product such as SeaDek underfoot.

SeaDek’s non-skid, closed-cell PE/EVA product is a safe and comfortable alternative to moulded-in, non-skid, paint-on textures and other marine-traction products currently available. SeaDek product is also UV protected and nonabsorbent, and features an innovative, textured micro-dot surface for enhanced non-slip characteristics.

NZ Fishing News has had SeaDek in its last two Extreme project boats, and we have enjoyed having firm footing even when wet. Better still, the product’s shock absorption and comfort-level qualities help decrease the fatigue of a long day on the water, as well as reducing noise levels – a big plus when chasing snapper in the shallows.

Those who want to do it themselves, can purchase a template kit and send it to Batavian to fabricate before returning it to be applied by the owner. SeaDek is formulated with a 3M acrylicbased, high-bond, pressure-sensitive adhesive that is ‘peel and stick’ and simple to apply.

SeaDek is available in a variety of sizes, thicknesses and colours, and can be customised to include logos, bevels, multi-coloured layering, boat names and so on. It can also be tailored to fit a wide variety of applications on just about any type of boat and customised for swim steps, trailers, gunwales, footwells and helm stations, as well as a cockpit coaming bolster.

Keen Napier angler and skipper Wayne Bicknell recently re-surfaced the cockpit and coamings of his game boat Wahoo. He says it was a painless process and he is rapt with the result.

Wayne used local applicator Charmans Motor Trimmers, who came down to the boat, created the template, then applied the finished kit on its return.

“The hardest part was removing the old teak,” Wayne says. Wahoo is berthed near the marina entrance and Wayne says he has had plenty of positive feedback.

“We also took the opportunity to give the cockpit a general makeover, so she looks very smart.”

Wayne says they have only been on one serious fishing expedition since applying SeaDek, but he is already impressed by its performance.

“It is certainly comfortable to walk on, provides good grip, and is easy to keep clean.”
