Casting - minimizing backlashes

If you use a baitcasting reel, particularly into wind, you have probably experienced a backlash. This tip does not prevent a backlash, but does minimize the time and cost of a backlash.

Strip out slightly more line than you will use in the cast. Then lay a piece of plastic tape across the spool. Wind the line back over the tape. Now if you get a backlash the tangle can go no deeper than the tape and is easier to sort out.

You also lose much less line if you have to cut it off.
