Brown trout tip

Warm summer evenings bring those elusive old brownies up to feed on dry flies on the surface. You've thrown every size and type of dry at them only to see the fish rise beside it but refuse it??

This was the case for me untill I figured out a cunning trick. When this situation is happening more often than not you'll see fish "finning" rather than rising. Those big tails and dorsals break the water teasing the fisher. This is because the trout are feeding on emerging nymphs which are close to, but not on the surface.

Next time you see this happening try a very small dry fly say a greenwells glory in size 18 or 20 tied onto a 12" dropper from the base of your dry fly hook. The dry fly is now primarily acting as an indicator. This combination is dynamite on large browns all over the north island.
