Frequently Asked Questions – Fishing Bite Times

What are fishing Bite Times?
Bite Times (also called Solunar periods) are predicted windows of higher fish activity based on the position of the moon and sun relative to Earth. There are usually two major periods and two minor periods every 24 hours.
What is the difference between major and minor bite periods?
Major periods occur when the moon is directly overhead or underfoot (lunar transit) and typically last about two hours. Minor periods occur around moonrise and moonset and usually last about one hour. Major periods are generally considered stronger.
Do Solunar Bite Times work in New Zealand?
Many experienced New Zealand anglers and charter operators use Solunar times, especially when they coincide with favourable tide stages. Major periods often align with the run-up to low tide, however results may vary by species, location, weather and water conditions.
How accurate are the times on this page?
Bite Times are calculated from astronomical positions of the sun and moon plus the nearest validated tide station. They are a useful planning tool that complements local knowledge, recent fishing reports, and what you actually observe while you’re on the water.
Why do I need to move the anchor on the map?
Both Bite Times and tidal level vary with location. Dropping the anchor at your fishing spot on Fishing News Bite Times gives more accurate bite times and tide data than general bite times which are often only based on a few major ports.
What does the Excellent / Good / Average rating mean?
The rating combines moon phase strength with how closely the major or minor periods overlap sunrise, sunset or key tide changes. The difference in height between high and low tides is greatest near new and full moon and these periods also produce stronger tidal currents.
