Lethal, where did you get the information on Midway?  I went to the US Fish and Wildlife Service page and 2 others and they all say that Midway is still closed to fishing.  Just curious, I would like to go there some day.  Good reason to visit my old school friends in Hawaii while in route Wink
Tis better to have hooked and lost than never to have hooked at all.

New Cal has some big GT's Head to the nor-eastern coast if you want untouched fishing. And MASSIVE doggies there too.
Vanuatu has some, check out Uruparapara and the small atoll of islands to the east. Epic yellowfin there too and Excellent doggies, A bit of a mission to get to, but well worth it.

Remote parts of the Sollies were also good, but we were getting smashed by everything, GT's couldnt beat the other stuff to the poppers.

PM me if you want any more info.
Cheers

Kieran

Thanks
Tony

And that's what it should be an 'adventure'... Approve

Any of those spots or locations could through up "big" fish but they aren't the adventure themselves.

Let us know what you put together Tony.

Midway Re-Opening Soon

Midway was closed to most tourism in January 2002.  Since that time, the US Dept of Fish and Wildlife has been developing a plan to reopen the island to visitation.  If you are interested in visiting Midway, please complete the request form at: Reservation or Inquiry
Midway Requets and we will email you
up to date information.  Thanks.

Midway ... once experienced,
never forgotten

if you can get hold of the video promo by "Inside Sportfishing" called "Forbidden Zone"
cover is pretty stink compared to what is inside...
you will see what i am talking about... totally unbelievable footage on and under....

Midway Island

Fishing within the lagoon:

  • Anglers may use pole and line, spin tackle and fly fishing gear only, and must release all fish alive.
  • Only artificial lures with a single barbless hook are allowed.  Hooks may not be baited, but chum may be used.

Thanks for everything you did for us Eric. may you rest in peace, You were one of the real legends of NZ recreational fishing

the main known places have already been mentioned. but there are also plenty of untouched or unknown spots that are hard to access that have unreal gts lurking. islands within the cooks group for example. aitu is one that is easy to access with great gts that have not seen a popper before. northern islands are hard to get to but massive massive gts, google earth rakahanga, pukapuka, penryn, manihiki for example.

i had a day on the gts today in aitutaki, some good fish there and a beautiful place too.

I just read about an exploratory trip to Marquessa that JDM out of the states is putting together. very reasonable price but certainly exploratory and primitive.

Recently went to Farquhar in the Seychelles and did a few days popping ina ddition to fly fishing. Many fish but the water was so hot they didn't fight as well as I thought. Lots of 30 to 45 kg GTs wandering around the outer reef. The guys I fished with said Cosmoledo in the Seychelles is the best place on earth but right now it is controlled by Somalian pirates.

LPB in New caledonia is kaput... the guys who ran it left the biz.

Kurt,

I know there's some monsters in Kiribati... I sent some lures there.

If you want to know more get hold of 'saffayakker' here on F.net, Deon is in Tarawa.
Yes there are monsters here. Unstoppable on 80lb braid in shallow water.Best so far is 32kg. Lost a monster last week but got a nice barracuda.

I don't think the Rowley Schoals have had much pressure, and could fit the bill ?

Rowley Shoals and Montabellos.... both interesting places! Mind you, I think a chunk of the Rowleys have been closed off as marine parks by the W.A. govt haven't they? On the "to do" list I reckon....
