Coupla questions...

Wow, going for gold straight away. You may not like game fishing (yeah right). Maybe go for something at a lwer cost or get more for the same value?

Think you do need tubes for skippies/albies if you want them alive for a reasoable period of time. Not sure abou the keep alives. I think Kahawai are hardier than tuna for baits in the water and a live bait tank.

What sort of boat are you heading out on/do you have? You sure you want to do the livebait thing and not lures?

Got a Haines hunter 5.8, heading west and out of Tairua, will prob just tow lures around, was just asking the question about the live bait tank as want one for the kings off Tairua and thought it may double up.......Reason for the gold is that I would never spend that on myself and if I get money out of the job my wife will steel it, and it will be better than Wefaknis gear is the main reason I suppose.....lol. Something cheaper would be fine too, but they all look around $1000 bucks anyway. Still waiting for bargin on trademe...........................

Good point Turtle, I may not like it, but want to catch one on my boat to say ive done it anyway, maybe a couple of tld50s but thy expensive as too?

Yeah see what Blue Asparagus wants for a couple of 80s, already spooled up and ready.
Know what ya mean about getting one on your own boat. If it was me on a 5.8 I wouldn't bother with livebaits for Marlin, just run your lures well. Tuna pretty much must have high water flow tubes - they die straight away in a bait tank.
And yeah, funny, my neighbour wants to do similar, and after many months of trying to sort it all out, discussions ....comes down to buying 2 x 50w with a couple of non rollered shimano rods as most shops do a good combo buy on these.

For a bit of a laugh have a nose at this Youtube...50w, a lure (didn't have time to use the livies)...easy Big smile

LRS all the way fish 50lb(overtest) or a thin diameter 80lb on them. Tuna need tubes..... no two ways about it. from what I've seen those keep alive tanks work very very well

before you deck it all out mate see if you like it 1st, lots of people have come before us and still waiting to get a fish and we are talking years for trying, some catch their first and wonder what the hype is all about and never do it again, hours of bordom and maybe a 1/2 hour of fun once in a while.

There are a few TLD 50s available at good prices which will certainly cover your needs, gold is not the be all.

If your about in northland at all look us up and you can borrow a couple of 80's, you loose or damage them you own em

Grant is right about the tuna tubes mate[not needed], why worry about skippys when you will have a far better hookup rate on a jack mac so a small live bait tank is the go and you can always rig dead baits as well, small Kahawai and Jacks over skippies is the go and use circle hooks and know how to set them on the bite, very exciting fishing, so tow your lures watch the gear and toss a bait if you get something playing back in your spread, and bloody good luck to you, its a sport you eith love or hate, me I cant get enough of it.

Nothing wrong with Tiagra 50 wlrs A models they hold ther value and weather you like the sport or not you will lose little on selling them again.

How ever if it is money you want to save wait a while and get a pen 50 TW with a rod for about $550-0 they have caught 1000's of marlin and will be worth about the same when you sell them, the only thing is to look closer at the rod as that is what does most of the work , the reel only holds line after you have pulled on the rod.

I have sold lots of rods and reels and played with trade me for years, keep looking they will come up soon, Just before xmas and after

Heya Matt,I've done a bit of trolling out West and all you need is a pair of 50w Shimano or Penn.A selection of lures like the Lumo Sprocket etc.Wouldn't worry about the Livebait tank better off getting a good quality stand-up harness imo...

Tiagra 50 sounds all good. Any thoughts on spooling it with 80LB braid? instead of 50LB mono

I am going through the same thing as you setting up my 5.5 surtees
Reels - mucked around for AGES deciding what to buy, i ended up going with Tiagra 80ws (have 2 so far), whats the point in buying a 50 when you can buy an 80 new for maybe 200$ more?, also as others have said they hold there value, i found on TM guys want about 150 to 200 less than new for a used one, and in some cases MORE than a new set.
The 80s was my logic and as I live in Tauranga was also planning on hitting waihau and the local reefs and doing a bit of live baiting and an outside chance of a blue or black (very wishful thinking) but figured would back myself from the start..

I am also in the process of fitting tuna tubes, after seeing the success of people livebaiting thought i would give it a go, last season we had a marlin come in on a livie at astrolabe on my first day out game fishing, didnt bite just swam under the boat check out the bait and kept going.

Good luck with your setup, my advice, shop around for the Tiagaras, there have been some crazy deals new on those lately.

Aluminator we began gamefishing from a runabout with two 50's and 2 30's...twthe 50's for marlin and tuna sized lures on the 30's to cover both bases...and then we moved up after learning and gaining confidence and experience with the medium sized gear, besides we couldn't afford the big goldies as beginners...so we had Shimano Beastmaster and TLD and two Penn Senators...
