Hi!

Any tips for a new fisherman to catch something worth smoking and eating around Wellington harbour tonight? My partner and I might head out, get some takeaways and fish from the beach or rocks around Petone or Eastbourne this evening. We're not experienced fisher-people, most of our fishing success coming from trolling a cheap lure on a hand-line behind a trailer-sailer to catch Kahawai. We have a 12' surfcasting rod and a very short boat rod between us, as well as said hand line. I've had a go chucking squid at the sea with the surfcaster and not caught much, except a wrasse off the beach at Pencarrow.

I've never been much of a fisherman, but I found catching a feed from the boat was very satisfying, my kids love to catch spotties etc. and, crucially, my partner's quite keen! And I love to eat smoked fish :-) so I'm keen to get anything decent to eat.

What size hooks should we use? What bait? Any ways to pick a spot?

If you're out Petone ways you might want to try that car bridge (that everyone fishes off) or Petone wharf.

People tend to use the float method off of the bridge fishing for KY.  Ballon as a float with ledger rig (sinker on the bottom) use whole of half pillies for bait.  I use 4/0 strike hooks for that setup usually.  It can be a bit of a challenge to get KY up the bridge so if possible walk it to the river bank edge and get someone else to land it (run down to the river) from the river bank.

Another nice fishing spot is Evans Bay infront of the NIWA building.  You can park up and there's rod holders in-build into the fence along there. Comfy as for kids etc or Miramar Wharf is ok too although you have to park at the entrance to the wharf now-a-days and walk your gears onto the wharf.

danp try this i fished it in the old day's and always came up trumps with this rig

3oz ball sinker on a running rig, with a polystyrine float above it then add two hooks, one near the tail and one in the eyes or up thru the head from the gills up. that is using herrings as bait. or just using live bait, hook em with a longer trace between there eyes so the fish can take it better.
man we caught some good kahawai off there, even kingfish have a go to.

Cheers, we wandered down to Petone wharf in the end, met a few interesting characters but the fishing was dead - we saw something reasonably big hanging around under the lights but no-one was getting any bites. Hopefully we'll get the boat out for a sail this weekend, troll for Kahawai, maybe fish at Ward Island.
