Posted this in the Walk-a-bout but haven't got much of a response so far so I thought you fulla's would probably be the guys to ask:

I'm looking at buying a handheld VHF to keep in my pack. The two that I'm looking at at the moment are Uniden Voyager or Undien Atlantis. Aside from the price the only difference I can really make out between them is that the Voyager is much smaller in size. Does this really justify the extra $100 on the price though?  What are your thoughts?
Only when the last tree has died and the last river has been poisoned and the last fish caught will we realise we can't eat money.

The Voyager works ok for me and many others as it is compact. Would suggest that put it in a waterproof bag (even though it is waterproof) as an added protector, plus the fact the knob (!) can perish in time. Good little grunty HH if you look after it-Cheers Yak Fisher

I'm assuming you are a rock fisherman. What's wrong with your mobile phone. Do you go to very remote places that wont have cell coverage?

As for the $100 diff - probably not really worth it unless there are other features offered for that extra money.

Yes mate landbased. I often fish in places without cell coverage which is the main reason I'm looking at a VHF but as well as that mobile phones are just too fragile around rocks and water!

Only when the last tree has died and the last river has been poisoned and the last fish caught will we realise we can't eat money.

Hi Beached

try to lay your hands on a copy of "Trade-A Boat" Nov Issue
on 52 they have one of the best summaries of Marine VHF hand helds I have seen for a long time.

P54 & 55 give a rating of 26 current NZ models - and a good answer to why you should use a couple of them

I am sure you can get this easy or send the editor an email - [email protected] and ask him for a copy

the Atlantis runs on NiMH batteries and has the option to run on AA batteries as a backup, splash proof...

the Voyager runs on lithium ion batts, robust body and is submersible (up to 30mins in a metre of water) i've used both and are awesome performers

I own a Voyager and recommend them all the time to kayakers because they are fully submersible, and small so fit into your PDF pocket but they do cost more... If I was you I'd stick with the lower cost Atlantis and spend the saving on something else :)

Well, are they not illegal to use on land? So when you fall in and go to use the Atlantis for the first time it will take on water and not work anyway. :-)
I have a Voyager in a bag in the front pocket of my PFD and love it.
