I have been using the Cobra Marauder for some years to tow out a long-line off the beach. Maybe it is increasing age, weight or sloth, but I'm increasingly less tolerant of the effort involved.
 
Mostly its fine, but whenever there is any sort of current, and/or cross wind I have real trouble keeping the boat straight, and consequently get a big belly in the line, and then struggle with the drag.
 
Last weekend setting it off Ohope I ended up stalling about 900m out, unable to head in the direction I wanted.
 
So any suggestions, please? Does it make much difference where the long-line is attached to the kayak? Typically I simply tie it on to one side next to the seat, rather than on any sort of centering yoke.
 
And are the Marauders know to be 'bad' at catching wind compared to alternatives?

Time for an update....

My previous question regarding the Cobra Marauder is irrelevant now, as that boat is toast. Some kind soul who also uses the bach managed to split it along the chines both sides about mid-ships. So its had its day, and its now time to replace it.

So I'm all ears as to recommendations for a replacement, please. Its main use will continue to be towing longlines from a surf beach, and also going for the odd look around......so very little to none actual kayak fishing.

I'm not keen on anything heavier than the Marauder was, and of course would be delighted with a boat that paddled more easily....hauling out that line isn't getting any easier...So after something stable, but long enough to make the paddle not too hard.

And is  a rudder worth having?

Rudder ! In saying that cross winds currents will still effect you once out around the hundred m's or so. No wind no current, good to go hard. 900 m's out you have to expect problems getting belly in line even a boat would need some power on towing a long line without belly that far out.
 Muppet says Viking 400 ,yes that would do the job well.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the replies so far....most helpful.

There is probably not going to be much opportunity for me to try any boats in the conditions I plan to use it, so will have to base a decision on my own assessments, and your advice!

Have had a look at a Viking Profish 400 and 440 in a shop, and kinda figure I'll be ok with one of them.....but which one? 400 seems to have the more moden seating position, but I suspect the 440 will be a 'faster' boat? 

So anyone tried both and have any useful insights to share, please?
 
Alternatively, if you have one of those boats why you chose it will help too, thanks!
