their anti reverse pawl is weak and is not built to with stand large amounts of drag (eg. 10kg+) for extended periods of time...   if you open one up and have a look at it, you'll find it's encased around plastic and is just a tiny little strip of metal and you can really see how it will **** it's self under high drag settings.    to put it simply PE3 sweet,   PE5 sweet,    PE6 and your pushing it,    PE7 and 8 just be prepared for a bashing...

i own one and it does the job fine, however i have had problems with the anti reverse pawl and bearings packing a sad and having to get them replaced...   i never run more than 10kg drag on mine,   any more than that and your asking for it in my opinion especially over and over again.

Whilst you're on the topic of toriums (and sorry i'm not trying to steal your thread), what's your guys' opinions on jigging with a torium 14. What line would you recommend and would it be worth getting the drag upgrade? Would be mainly for snapper but would be keen to drop some 200g? jigs for kings. Or am i just asking for trouble trying for kings?

drag upgrades on Torium is no silver bullet.  Sure you will get a few kgs more but the drag improvement is restricted by the few drag elements it has.  Improvement?  Yes but the rest of the reel has its limitations.  A good thumb pad is very useful with a decent bit of patience.
Cost to upgrade fully is around $140 + labour.
give it death!

The reel i used for 2 seasons was a torium 16 the only improvement was washers which cost only $40. it wasnt to increase the drag but to make it smoother and more even. That reel caught kings up to 30kgs with NO anti reverse issues fishing pe4 on a jm350ps. It performed well beyond its price tag!! And chris is absolutely right a well applied thumb can be as usefull.(by the way chris congrats on the new rods very well done)

Good starting point to get you hooked on jigging, have had plenty used on the boat and plenty of fish round the 20k mark landed easy enough, once you have caught a few and been peeled by a few and blown it up, then time to splash out on something a bit gruntier.  enjoy the burning thumb!!!

Been using a torium 20 on new jig star 350.
Initially hard to develop good action with the torium but becomes easier.
Very capable on smaller sized kings, but reckon anything approx 9kg plus will start to test the drag.
Still waiting to catch some big kings on it. I guess when a few really do some damage, I will wreck the drag and have to upgrade... buma LOL

What other reels in lower price range are up to the task, I have a saltist 40, but wish I had something with a narrower spool. Can someone give a few lower priced options?

Saltist 30T (not 30TH) is about the best jigging reel in the under $400 area.
