Time to sell one of the (3!) TLD25s I have and upgrade to something more serious for LBG kings. Looking for something that's going to basically give me more + smoother drag to fish on my custom king stick. I've had the TLD25 maxed out on drag on it a few times on fish, and the stick still has so much grunt left in it that it needs something more serious to go with it.
Obviously looked at TLD50, what else are you guys using/wish you were using? Look fwd to some suggestions
Cheers

try a daiwa sld30 if you can find one mate. a little bigger then tld25 and more drag + metal body. i skipped straight through to one and dont regret it at all. smooth as drag and a steep drag curve so you can have a good drag at strike then plenty more to play with.

Back the 30WLRS with braid and you should get a kilometre on it, then just gut hook the thing and he won't run far. We got one this year that didn't take 300m of the reel. I know because Mick had 700m of braid under it and that was on a Tyrnos 30, 80lb braid & 50lb mono.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. Just looked at an sld30 from the US. Can buy them used in excellent condition for less than $200! Might be the go...

Any other ideas?

I don't feel the need for anything more than my TLD30 and 50 - the 30 goes out for Coro / mid-north missions and the 50 for far north, East Cape and also for anywhere from about now till end of June in case a horse turns up. Both with 37kg mono for security.

Anything flasher would be munted by me in no time on the rocks.Big smile

TLD 30 with upgraded drag (greased carbon fibre). Don't worry about strike drag settings, just set sunset to as much as you can hang onto or until it still allows full free spool. Replace the stock handle with a TLD 50 handle or T-Bar handle. Load it with 37kg mono and hang on.

Or buy a TLD50 and just do the drag upgrade.

What blank was used in your custom rod? Calstar?

or just buy a sld30. and .. keep it stock standard. sounds like a whole lot more fuss than is needed with the tld30 and 50 and handles and what not.

Daiwa just keep making damn good gear. hard to keep up with them these days.
here fishy, fishy fishy.....

Do you really need to do a drag upgrade on the TLD50? Surely would be doing it for smoothness only as they already come stock standard with more drag than the SLD30.

You appear to lose full free spool around 12kg on the 50s which I reckon is plenty for off the rocks. The SLD30s lose full free spool at a fair bit less (about 8kg) as comparison.

Both are sweet reels that will do the job for you Forsyth and about the same price nowadays. Just depends if you really want the bigger and heavier TLD50 (you saw mine) or something a bit smaller like the SLD30 or TLD30 which are still very capabale and much more comparable reels.

Thanks again guys, useful feedback.

The blank is indeed a calstar. Was matt from Just Fishin's rod till he sold it to me a few years back.

The 50 seemed an ok size to me Jade - thanks mate! Really though, I should have taken it with me up north this week ;)

Not sure that I can be bothered with getting a new reel then needing to change handle and drags straight away. Doesn't seem the most efficient way to do it! But who knows what I'll end up doing!

I find the only draw back with the TLD50 is the weight in the backpack, but if you're boating in most of the time that won't be a problem.
The Tyrnos 30 and 50 could also be worth a look...anyone use them?
