If wanting to give a non licence holder a brief introduction to flyfishing
would it be legal if a licence holder hooked a fish then handed the rod
to a non licence holder to play?

Obviously allowing them to cast a fully rigged line is not allowed but
would it be ok for them to use a hookless fly?

As it is ok to give casting tution in a paddock or suchlike is it also ok to
do so over trout holding water if any chance of hooking a fish is removed ?

The "angler" would be deemed to be fishing.
If you want to give lessons over the water, tie a bit of cotton wool or sumsuch on the end of the leader.
Leave any hooks out of the equation & should be ok~~I thinkConfused

Yes it does (24 hour license). It'd be a pretty mean minded ranger to ping you, but they do exist.
We used to run coaching courses (Manawatu Freshwater Anglers) and as soon as we went near water, a license was required. NO exemptions.

Bazza...A 24 hour licence would curb any argument when near water would be even better if pupil fluked a fish during a lesson
Also a reminder of the problems you and I had a few years back and we both had licences

yeah it would totally be down to the ranger that busted you I reckon... but with only 1 rod and 1 license between you I doubt there'd be too much hassle

24 hour licenses exist but they are expensive..., over $1 per hour the license is issued for I think.. but if they're keen to learn flyfishing they should get a season license! its gonna take more than one lesson to learn it...

another option is to go to the sea and try and catch some mullet!

Expensive? Ever fished overseas? An "ok" reservoir in Wales with stocked trout cost me 40 pound to fish for a day, on top of the 7 day national sport-fish license I had already paid for....

The Fish and Game 24hour license is only "expensive" compared to the value you get with a full season license.... basically 4 to 5 days of fishing between 1st Oct and the next 1st Oct and you've broken even....

Bazza, start your mate out with a few casting lessons at the park and tell him to buy a season license...... 24 hours isn't really enough to get a grip on this great sport, but sure is enough time to get bitten by the bug!

be aware, one rod and one license doesn't help if the person holding rod is not the person on the license..... if you are by the water holding the equipment, you are deemed "fishing".

The only "hard to prove" situation is when there are two people on a boat trolling, one with a license and one rod in a rod holder.....
