If you've got your Fish Magic just so, you can bring in some good sized Kahawai off the Seatoun or Rona Bay wharves.

Serious about the Fish Magic though - for the majority of the time, they're difficult to find there.

Though in saying that, I've pulled in gurnard, and my fishing buddy pulled in a monkfish during those Kahawai off-times.

Oh, and a few congers and more spotties than I know what to do with.  Anyone want a spotty?

Keep your Spotties px!

May I ask, what is Fish Magic?

Also where is Rona Bay? Sorry new to Wellington, is it near Seaview?

Thanks 41south, so would that wharf mentioned above be the same one at days bay or separate?

It's not the one at Days Bay... keep driving.  A bay around you'll find a road that goes off to the right called Marine Drive (from memory) and a couple of hundred meters down there on the right, there is an access driveway between two (again, memory) Norfolk Pines that leads into the Muritai Yacht Club...  you can park on the beachfront and wander straight up onto the wharf.

And what is Fish Magic?

It starts with a dance.  It's just a step to the left...

Sometimes it takes the blood of a chicken.

Other times, you have to use a divining rod..

You know, it's Fish Magic!

If you were out Eastbourne way at low tide, you'll need to cast out quite a long way to find anything other than spotties and small kahawai.  In saying that, you'll still catch something, if something is passing by and is hungry enough.

To catch some small ones, a bit of squid on some 1/0s or smaller will do it.  I haven't had any luck with soft baits as yet.

The fillets on a small kahawai are...  quite small.  Great bait, for bigger kahawai though.  Caught a reasonable size red gurn with kahawai as bait.  I wholeheartedly endorse this fish as bait.  Tasty with butter and garlic too, tho.

I have had no luck with soft bait, threw them in the bin after 3 fishless trips, back to the bait and catching again.

I usually use 4/0 size hooks, but got told the other day by a passer by to use 1/0 or 2/0 at biggest, what's everyone's thoughts on this?

I am not targeting any fish species in particular..

YFM:  I use those strike lures all the time.  Never travel in the yak without dragging at least one and always nabbing KY's on them, as well as the occasional king, but that's a one-way battle on my light KY lines...and a 20lber Snapper a couple of years ago.Clap

The "hex wobblers" are probably the best all round KY lure for shore fishing though. Easy to cast too.

YFM:  The soft rubber ones that you described hold up reasonably well, as the hook takes the load, and KY don't have teeth as such.  Eventually the hooks start to pull out of the body, that's when I cut the hook off and tease the cat on the lawn whilst practising my spot casting Big%20smile

As far as using the solid metal lures, bring it in fast - You'll never outwind a KY.

I find the bright green flasher rigs work well on KY on the west coast of auckland, with pilchard for bait.

Maybe give these a blast too buddy!  Lures are good if the KY are in a plenty, but if you want a bait to sit out while the schools move through then a bright green flasher is the way to go mate!
