Using a overhead reel on a spin rod?

Hi everyone,
 
As far as I can see the main difference with spin rods is the first guide is further up the rod towards the tip. Would it be adequate to use a overhead reel on a spin rod with reasonable results or is this just a dumb idea. (I have a mate who can lend me his Saltiga spin rod and was going to put a Torium 20 on it and if it works then I will buy my own). Useage will be jigging/some bottom fishing. Cheers

Best guys to ask would be MIB & Kojak.
The spine would be on the wrong side allowing rod to twist like a ******* & probably break before it should have!

As Nirai said and you also need to ensure that the guides are suitably spaced to prevent the line rubbing against the rod when under load.

I usually test the rod by fitting the overhead reel I intend using on it and then seeing whether the line touches the rod at any point. It has been surprising to me to find so many overhead rods that do not satisfy that requirement (irrespective of cost or manufacturer).

But Mr Smith, where is the backbone in an Acid Wrap?, on top so it's in line down in the engine room, or on the bottom with the majority of the runners, like a Spin rodConfused

Good question Bunzo, I would think spine would be on top in line with stripper guides at the stop them end of the rod???

Thats a good question for Kojak and Tiny. These days we try as much as possible to design rods with exact wraps as the cloth goes down the mandrel. The reason for this is when you chop a blank up the inside of the spine always relates to the thinnest part of the wall section. In the past you just added more cloth to increase power to a blank but that can cause multiple spines. It is more common now to buy a range of mandrels so you have more taper rates to chose from. We do use variable taper rate mandrels for a lot of rods but we learnt the hard way with our short Fibermax blanks if you dont design the pattern right with these mandrels you create too much wall varaiation as the taper changes.
The main tool that blank makers use now to stop twist is off axis fibre. CD rods did it long before Shimano brought out their T-Curves. We all use the same modulus cloth for the uni material but how and what we use for the off axis material is the difference between each Brand.

I forgot to mention, from our testing in the jig you reduce the load capacity of the blank if you deliberately reverse the spine by about 5kg for a jig rod.
SO DONT USE A OVERHEAD ON A SPIN RODCry
 
ACIDS? The guides might be able to swing both waysLOL LOLbut the blank can not, mabye thats why Nirai wont use them.

I dont think they are swingers, their rods are generally stiffer and their reels have bigger knobs.

Try bending over backward to pick something up off the ground it may be able to be done but it will hurt, in effect that is what you would be doing to a spin rod used as an overhead. Like humans each rod will generally have a spin, bend it the wrong way and you are asking for trouble. recommendation get an overhead rod

Or you could use the rod the correct way up (guides down) and the reel mounted under - would have to wind backwards and left handed but should be do-able.
