Has anyone has good catches in this area lately. I'm thinking of heading there tomorrow morning before sunrise. I've heard it is good for Kingies.

Never caught a fish there......EVER, last try.....Yesterday
 
Have heard of good catches here and I guess thats why I keep having a try thereOuch

yip go there but fish inside corner, 2nd you dont need to go that far, trust me have a look on your sea map, plenty of reef structure and best ,best ,best bait is piper  dead or alive, but if your in close to kawau big **** off kahawai baits is the go, ask any of our family I am sure a fish of 88lb gutted would get the blood flowing.

resident bait at flat is jack macs. the kings we got yesterday were full of them(4 big jack macs in a 30lb king). also slimys work well around kawau. i dont like piper as a bit but thats just me as it works really really well for some people, the jacks you can tow around live easily and cover more ground. kahawai bigger the better for shallow livebaiting at kawau

your boat will get out there easy cosmo just remember a nasty little land breeze often comes up in the hour before dark round whangaparoa and sometimes makes a choppy trip back

Flat Rock = F All in my opinion also.  Sure if you work area hard you will bring home some snapper, but better places to fish.  Agree some Kings there though.
Don't weigh it - don't say it.

Day time for sunbathing evening time for fishing....our 115L icytek was full to the brim with some fat as fish tonight...Dont bother even launching before 6pm Wink

I manged to get an 8lb Snapper and a small Kingy there yesterday. Other than that it was very quiet.
 
What was with all those kahawai all around the rock that did NOT want to take any lures or baits. There were hundreds of them but not a single hookup. They just circled and circled. Maybe they only had sex on the brain?
 
My mate that was with me said at the end of the day that he's going to sell his fishing gear now. He was not a happy camper after yesterdays fishing. He got nothing. I'll be sharing my smoked Snapper with his family though.

Pleased for you guys, when we were out there I said to Ledeine this would be a great night possie, unfortunately, prior committments prevented us staying out, but dont be surprised if you go out there and see a 6 metre Haines Signature in the hood...that will be us, reckon it was good of the day shift to prep the area for the night shift yesterday tho eh???LOL

I have better luck drifting over the sand about 1-2 miles east of flat rock. Pretty much agree with of2fish's comments.

Hey Blue Coral, in my experience it seems that when the Kahawai are there like that but not taking the baits its because there is a king or 2 upsetting there day. Ive caught a few kings when trying to get Kahawai and each time the Kahawai havnt been taking the bait, i guess if i was worried about a big fish eating me i wouldnt be to worried about grabbing a pie.

Those kawahai are eating something, we have also tried to catch them. tried shiny lures, plastics baits all sorts.
 
If you drift quietly into them you will see they have their mouths open. Whatever they are eating is very small, they are scooping it into their open mouths.
 
The sooty shearwater birds were there eating the same thing.
 
For those of you who have never seen Flat Rock this is it.
 

In this second pic you can see the kawahai in the water. 

This last pic shows one of the tight packed schools, plus the birds among them.

You would tend to think there would be snapper under these, but if there was we were unable to tempt them out. This confirms my thinking that whatever the kawahai are eating it's not messy.
 
Noticed there are plenty of sharks here though.

i remeber a dive there once and those kahawai made a chimney arond me then a hole opened up and a big kingy swam inside the chimney ,eyeballed me then anothe hole and he disapeared out the other side wicked...
