Hey ozz... Are ya sure your not getting kgs confused with  lbs??? a 6-8kg (13-17.5lb)Kahawai would pretty much take out most nz records for Kahawai... depending on line class... a 6-8lb Kahawai is a big Kahawai. a 6-8kg Kahawai is a f**ken MONSTER...
So you're a feminist... How cute

Hey there trendsetters.   I use to spend a bit of time camping out at Spirits Bay in Far North.   Now and again rock hoppers would land what was called 'Ocean Going Kahawai'.  These mothers were f**king huge.  I think 10 - 15 kgs would be nothing special for these buggers.   They looked a little like mullets on steroids with their big rounded heads but was assured they were Kahawai none the less.  One I can distinctly recall was laid over the bonnet of my then first car - an Austin Mini (can you picture me in a mini - well it was a long time ago)  and it stretched from one side to the other with it's tail almost touching the ground.  Probably close to 4 feet in length.   Maybe I was just stoned but the memory is pretty firm.

Anybody confirm their genus?  Lethal?

Haven't seen one myself but seen photos plus at Hunts on the shore there is one mounted on the wall from Spirits that from memory is 21 pd.....pretty big for a Kahawai. However I didn't think they went as far south as wellington. I think they are also known as Kermadec Kahawai.

Arripis xylabion or Kermedec Kahawai, ocean going Kahawai, etc... found commonly around the Kermies, Norfolk etc...

Yea I am familiar with these fish... they reach northern NZ in summer. Distinguishable by their larger eye and deeply forked tail. They have recently been recognised as a seperate species from A. trutta which is just your garden variety Kahawai...

So you're a feminist... How cute

One of the girls we took camping at Labour Weekend caught a kahawai that was up around 10 - 11 pounds straight off the beach at Mangawhai. I was the only bloke that caught anything decent and that was a couple up around 6 pounds.

Grrrrrrr, us blokes were f**ken gutted. We're never gonna hear the end of it.

Farcanal, Andrew I've seen that fish you talk about at Hunt's... It's looking pretty rough and I always passed it off as just an old kingie... I never took a close look at it. Bloody oath!

Ocean going kahawai's tail is also deeper than it's head is long... if that makes sense. Where as, the Joe Bloggs kahawai has a tail shallower than it's head length.
Keep knockin', nobody's home.

Zeke       if it ain`t broke, buggar it, fix it anyway

yeap lalandi... i know the difference between kgs and lbs and from my job just at a guess i can usually get a kg weight pretty dead on... if i accadently droped a 6-8pounder back i woudnt have really cared...

and yeah alot of people often mistake a large kahawai with a kingi... its pretty uncommon to find them anywhere near that large down in welly that why i was so gutted to lose it... but large kahawai around 10-15kg are not thaat uncommon in the far north parts of NZ espeshilly in the summer months...

cheers ozz
