finally got out the old camera and shot this sequence of photos to explain the process -

you need this: jig hook, kevlar cord (30 - 35cm), heat shrink tubing or lumo crimp sleeve, solid ring & split ring.

take the kevlar and fold it. Then tie a 2 turn surgeon knot (double granny) being careful not to cross the cord.

reduce knot a little and insert the hook into the knot. Be careful of the orientation of the hook.

use pliers and tighten up the knot. Push the loop through the hook eye and pull up tight.

the assist hook is ready to fish now.  You can tidy it up by slipping over a lenght of heat shrink tubing to protect the knot.  Final bit is to add the rings.

An easier knot to tie is with a single overhand knot (granny knot) which should be strong enough.  You can ensure the strenght by couple drops of superglue around the knot and eye.

Finish off with heat shrink tubing and rings.

Easy eh?
Now you are ready to fish Big%20smile
give it death!

Just an observation....I noticed that with the specialist assist hooks like the Owner SJ and Gamakatsu Tuned, the eye is turned just slightly so that the cord sits nicely in a straight line with the shank.

Gamakatsu Tuned jig hooks Cam.  Note the slight up turned eye and the typical Japanese style bend.

Where do you get those lumo crimp sleeves from?

What size heat shrink are you using to fit over a size 35 tuned Gammie? 6mm?8mm?

Cheers,
Josh

Hi Chris.... any thoughts about using the heat shrink with the epoxy or glue lining that would make the knot locked in glue after it cools down.... do they use that, or the superglue for preference? You kow the stuff I mean? They use it to make waterproof heatshrink joins.

It is only boring black colour, but hey, better than normal straight plastic heatshrink you think?
Cheers mate,
Stu.

Hi Josh,
Not exactly answering you question but I like using heatshrink that shrinks to a tight fit over the cord- I can't remember what mm it is. But I find that a bit of slow-set superglue at the knot and eye helps lubricate the tight fitting heat shrink to slide over the thicker knot/eye.. If it is still too tight, I insert the tip of a needle nosed plier into the end of the heatshrink then firmly but slowly opening the jaws to widen the tube, if you know what I mean.

Cheers, Clarence

Josh I've been using 1/4" (6.4mm) coloured heat shrink tubing but if you use heavier cord or a bulkier knot, then go to the next size up.
That is lumo heat shrink over the assist hook.

I've used the glue lined heat shrink before but find the price is many times more than regular heat shrink.  Since none of my knots uses glue, I don't need to use this type of heat shrink.  If you use the red kevlar, the knot won't slip.  Glue is for the non believers!Wink
