Sediment, hmmm, been coming down rivers since the dawn of time.
Hauraki plains, bottom of the firth, Canterbury plains, etc etc all formed by sedimentary deposits over millions of years.
I don't think sediment is necessarily the issue, it is even probably too hard to figure out if the rate of sedimentation has increased or decreased over time, There would have been periods of high erosion in the mountains and hills in the past that contributed enormous amounts of sediment.
The issue is the content of the sediment and, to quite a large extent, our stupid idea that this planet should remain in some form of suspension so it stays as it is and nothing changes. The only constant around coastlines is change! Whether through wave action, sedimentation, uplift, sinking plates etc etc.
What is discharged into the oceans from land by us and its contents are what we need to control.
Generic sediment is not an issue, it is part of the "system".
