With only 4 years under my belt, I am a novice compared to many of you guys... but was surprised to see a fish at Bland Bay that I had never seen before.

Resorting to the wisdom of the mighty Axemen, Snoop with a wise and sage tone, informed me that it is a painted moki.

Glad I didn't shoot it... it was acting like a puppy...

Wow that's cool. Beautiful markings on it. Never seen one before. Just saw my third ever copper moki the other day.

Mate, if you've only been diving for 4 years you've got a long time ahead of you seeing fish you've never seen before. There's something like 1250+ fish species recorded in NZ, with NEW ones being recorded pretty regularly

With at least 1200 more triple fins yet to be discovered.

I got this as my xmas present. It's the dogs bo#ocks of fish books and I can confirm there are many, many types of triplefin!

It is expensive but well worth it if you can swing one- it has kept me busy with the crappy seas we have been having!

That's interesting. I spotted one at the outpost a few years ago. Long John later speared it and sent it to Te Papa. Does it give the date that it was recorded in Greymouth? When I mentioned it to Te Papa before LJ shot it they reckoned none had been recorded to date in NZ.

Also, a book like this has a long gestation, so it is difficult to keep it absolutely up to date

There is a real mix... Some are line drawings, others are 'fish on a slab' photos a few are in water shots.
It really is an insanely detailed work, not a spotters guide. So really is for interest rather than a casual guide. I'm sure as DD says it is already out if date but there is no way you will run out if you are on a tick list unless your are really committed:-)

Current favourites Southern seadevil, because of its totally mad tail and phantom anglerfish. This may change as I read more!

Herby- any chance of resurrecting the fish thread, that was sweet...

If you look hard enough you'll find that those blue trevally are in most of the schools you see around the offshore islands and pins.
They aren't bluefin trevally (the omilu from the tropics), bluefin trevally look more like GTs than our standard trevally.
That's not saying a bluefin trev wouldn't get here, anything is possible.

The one from the outposts was a different species and didn't make the cut off date unfortunately. Same with the tailor speared on here, as well as Herby's toadfish.
