there is probably a lot more of them gems being lost as we head further into the old moving on and technology is getting to technical for the older fork to grasp.

i will try to explain how splicing wire to a hook using no crimps, but first a reason way,
some charter boats learnt extra little tricks from venturing out with other operators from around the world this is one i was lucky enough to be shown,
for a charter boat using hooks and wire it become essential to stop electrolysis happening between crimp and stainless steel wire, regardless of which crimp was being used,
because charter boats are trolling virtually everyday and crimps and wire don't last more than 1 to two weeks before weakening.
this is what they needed to achieve a seasons use.

first the wire is 7 strand,

splitting the wire into 2 is possibly the hardest, you will end up with a 3-4 split, make sure they unwind with without any wire out of place they must come away evenly like in first pic,

second pic shows how you insert through eye of hook crossed over, if the cross over of the 2 strands do's not mesh back as one then swap one strand over, "like the one under to over the other"  this just a matter of trail and error, like only two ways it can go one is correct the other wrong,

work them so they fold into each other making the wire look as if it had never been parted in the first place, right back to the areas it was split from both sides.

right now with both ends laying back down the intact section of wire its quite capable of landing fish but to finish it nice and neat you can either heat shrink or as i have done wrapped it with wax thread finished off with half hitches.

interesting "lethal" i suppose average person easier to puchase gear made up,would suggest if going to have a go try first without a hook ?be prepared to be stabbed by wire ends. might try it myself with this weather.

haha pjc yes a few little pricks is normal, but if you cant handle it one should harden up,
i used to make a whole rig set up for SSports Papakura for the West coast game guys,
was very popular in its day because of the amount of Mako's that were hooked back then,
i guess its like how many guys still wind on a spool of 800mts of line these days?
you have no one to blame other than yourself then if it beds itself into the line below and breaks off.
i still rip the line off with a drill and wind on through the rod at a tension i know is not going to cause a problem later on, another lost art being lost dew to people not have time.

How apt, have just finished rigging dead baits, squid and garfish for swimmers.
It's been awhile since I have done this.
Re learning knots suitable and working the cradles in SS wire, copper wire and wax thread.

I was just looking at setting some hooks via splicing wire, first thought, those bloody pricks in the finger and then the how rusty I am, I then gave it away to come in for a beer.

I think I will go for a mix of modern and old.

rig some flying fish, they are awesome if you put light spring steel through the eyes and clips to the wings,  put them on the outriggers, they fly

Mangre, you will find this sad, but I have rubber ones.

With no launch anymore staying out on the water is a compromise. Part of new techniques I suppose, which is why solo small boating offers opportunities and loss.

I don't know the rig you mean but I think if lucky enough to net some I will try the rig.

As a thought can you buy them.

Another thought, wouldn't it be great to get fresh livies at the port or ramp from an entrepreneurial person seizing an opportunity. And pre rigged would make it all to easy.

You do get lazy as ya get older in some areas, unless ya got some deckies around.

Mangre2. Do you rig the flying fish as skip baits? Or swimmers ?
My son wants me to show him how to rig up a jack mack swim bait so at least he wants to learn a few of the old techniques lethal 😉

Wire splicing is a lost art, When I was a kid our elderly neighbour worked for Cookes ( ex Navy man ) and did their splicing for the logging industry. He offered to train me but me being the early teenager tearaway wasn't interested. He made alsorts of stuff for us as kids bracelets and other cool things.

Mine were more so a skip bait, they did swim with a chin weight  but  once they did a re- entry the light gauge spring wire opened the wings, just cool to watch.

all it was was electrical crocodile clips to the wings, wire through the eye, and circle hook on the nose.

caught nothing though lol

Caught nothing though, nice one Mangre2.

My first thought with the rubber ones was to use them to cast at Kings, haven't yet had the opportunity but have one rigged for that scenario.
Towed one on shotgun, quite an active lure.

i rigger up with the clips years ago but dont think i ever got to use themi may have once,  i picked it up out of tips section in marlin mag

as for the rubbers they have been around for years i towed them for some time with no hits, they look good and i  still have one  but u would have to push me to run it ,

i just stick to the lures that work for me and keep my bait fishing rigs  down to simple LOL simple still worksClap
