Hi guys

What size split rings and what poundage do you use on poppers and stick baits. I lost a very big GT yesterday when the split ring on the belly hook decided to go.Cry Was using Owner 120lb split rings and 80lb braid. Is that rings to light for my setup or was it just a bad one.

Your thoughts??

Bad luck Deon, 

IMO the #8 (120lb) split-ring is a bit too light. I would recommend a minimum of #10 (220lb) but would rather use the #11 (250lb). 

By the sounds of things you are putting plenty of hurt on these fish (bending hooks etc) so you might need to step up in the terminal department i.e change out your Live bait hooks for JOBU's etc... 

Stick with the Onwer Split-rings mate, they are very good quality. There are other brands also but be wary. I was disappointed with the Varivas Power Rings, they deform too easily when simply rigging hooks etc... They don't snap back into shape, and lack tension.

Another newer brand I have used is the Power Jig range, not tested on a fish yet but they are looking good. Nice shape, quality material, hold their shape well, and have good tension.  Will be interesting to see how they go this summer.

Good to see your getting onto some solid fish mate, when the little 40g Bombers turn up give em' heaps, a 40kg GT is the best on that wiring so far.

i use the size 10 owners and have not bent them yet. good work there saffayakker on the gt's, he he he! the big ones sure are tackle busters!

250lb min on pretty much any lure that can carry them. More than required for Kingfish but I don't see the use in two sizes when they all cost much of a muchness, load for elephants and don't be disappointed

 Made in Japan Ten Mouth size 8 are 255lb and very good, and availiable from greg at gofish

Just solder up the split rings - even cheap ones wont pull apart then. After all how often do you change hooks before the lure is lost.
