Ive got a few questions about the Tongariro and how to fish some specific pools, would appreciate any tips anyone has.....

How do you fish the cliff face between the Admirals pool and Stag pool? Is this a case of having an extremely long leader, like 2 rod lengths, plus a large bomb and then a couple of flies off that? Its very slow water but appears to be very deep?

At the red hut pool, instead of walking over the bridge, if you drop down onto the small ledge on the car park side, is that worth a fish? and is that the same old story with a longer leader than normal?

Also, Ive seen some great fish in the elbow in the river between the Whitikau Pool and the Sand Pool, Ive tried fishing from the small island, and also wading across the sand pool and climbing up the other side, but no joy, just not quite sure how to fish it, (or what to fish it with!).

Finally the Blue Pool, I see a few guys fishing the head of this pool, although ive never seen anyone catch anything here, is the stretch of water below this productive? It seems to be very even with no pools or holes, is it worth fishing (ive tried but no joy at all) and how would you fish it? 9 foot leader with only brass bead head flies?

Thanks in advance for anyone who replies.....

hmmm you sound like myself, its quite a daunting place to get your head round. Ive had more sucsess at the sand pool than the rest.

as you entre the sand pool throw a gold bead head #6 woolly bugger (i weighted it with putty to) into the head of that rapid and swing it as close to the bank as possible, cross over to the little island i run a weighted rubber leg's up to alight brown sadle back and a dropper with a pheasnt tail..... ive had a coupling of good fish give me a schooling thereEmbarrassed but i dont really no the place all that well yet so take it as hear sayLOL

Are you talking about the little buggers that sit under the cliff face of admirals car park ?? i swear there just put there to piss me off.....ive had a crack from below at them every time i have been down usaly at dusk on the way home.I couldnt keep up with the rate the line was coming back down stream from below them,i try'd to cross the last time but got the s*#t's half way accros im not that confident....maybe you can wader accross further up and drop back down on the other sideWacko

The ledge is definately worth fishing, you got it with the long leader thing 2 rod lengths of leader and a really heavy bomb to get down.

The cicada pool (piece of water between admirals and stag) is best at the head and riffly piece, the extremely deep hole doesnt really hold to the extent you think it would.

Alas the upper river in general is a write off at the moment, the catch rates are way down up there. the best water imo is big bend and fan pool RHS or the reef LHS as they always hold feeding fish

I fish the cicada pool quite a lot and when there is a bit more water in the pool both the hole at the bottom is productive running flies from the shallow water down into the deep drop off. The best run for me in the pool is the inside or closer run of the two currents from about half way up to the head of the pool - I tend to use a 12ish foot leader in there (so long as the fish haven't been thrashed all day).

I have actually hooked and landed a fish from the admirals cliff face. The ledge further up the face as a laugh while we were having a de-brief. I roll casted out and a fish sitting up high in the water column took it and ran me around the pool - had no idea what to do. So I passed the rod up to a mate, and we passed it too each other around trees until we got to the lower ledge and then he ran down and i drifted the fish back to him to net. Was a 3lb slab but man it was a hoot.
Would love to know more about the pools above - have done almost 30 days on there this season and have yet to fish half the pools mentioned above!
