Hi all,  Im looking for a general all purpose "boat rod" with lever drag reel and noticed the Shimano 2000LD (charter special) setup, although my original intention was to get a TLD 15.

Has anyone used either of these reels?

Would you go for the slightly more expensive TLD 15 or the 2000LD and why?

2000ld has a touch more drag an is a touch smaller my pick for braid, level wind so not really for casting. The Tld 15 has a wider spool, prob my pick for mono and casting, 7kg drag I think?

Boat only with braid, Charter Special.

Most used reels on my boat are the two Charter Specials with mono for bottom fishing.
Caught more fish than any other reel. They live on the boat and never come home, which is not good.
I have had mine for at least 10 years, and when they start to get stiff or rattle a little, they go straight to Swordish Steve for an overhaul and then last another 3 to 4 years.
The Charter Special is a robust and excellent perofmring reel

And the Charter Specials have the benefit of being indexed, so you don't have to shread your thumb when winding to make sure the line goes onto the reel nicely.

I have used both extensively (I have 2 x TLD 15's (8kg and 10 kg line), a TR2000 (8kg line) as well as 2 x TR1000 (3kg & 4kg lines) and are great reels, fantastically smooth drags. Caught a number of Yellowfin Tuna and Kingies on the TLD15's upto 30 kg and fought a Yellowfin Tuna (30-35 kg) on a TR2000 for 3.5 hrs on 6 kg and it was flawless (lost fish due to my imatience not the reels fault). Also I use my TR1000 & TR2000 for straylining and they do cast ok, not a true casting reel but if you are using good size baits they are no problems to cast with.

I have a charter special....great reel. pulled in some good fish sharks on it, and doing so 'tested my knots' see what would give.
Been thinking about a TLD 15  still need a reason to spend money on it rather than put in the tank of the boat
Got a couple little trg 200 g as guest reels... and they have had a bit of a hammering to.. dont underestimate those either...
But if u are close into the rocks, hit a real big record breaking snap or king fish, cant let it get to the rocks... THEN u need real serious gear... and make use of your gym membership several times a week.... or dont fish so close to the rocks lol

Ive got 2 charter specials Dan and theyve had a real thrashing. Awesome reels. Both have handled kings to 12 kg fine. Even used one for albies a few times. They can be very cheap during the 30% sales at rebels...

There is a quirk with them thu. There is a piont about the 2 to 2.5 kg mark where when on free wheel it doesnt fully free wheel.
I thoiught it was something wrong, but a bit of investigation / dismantle etc found that this is normal.
I also found... google, a guy in florida I think from memory who re build reels as a profession discusses this.....there are 2 spacer shims in the back of the break.. the factory and an aftermarket... a thin one and a "thick" one... and this is where gets weird lol....when both are miced up they are the same thickness...
Anyway.. by replacing with the 'thin one, it will re spool right up to the 15 lb max break...
I set my reels to about 2 to 2.5 kg before going out...if straylining I just turn the break back 1/2 turn.. and it free wheels....

So If your charter special doesnt free wheel with over 2  / 2.5 kg on the break... its NOT faulty or broken

I keep using my Charter Specials (2000LD) as they are just a really well made reel. One of them has the level wind removed, and has 6kg mono on it for stray lining. Lots of newer reels out there, with more features, but whoever made the CS did a great job.

If you are using braid the narrow 1000ld might be all you need. You also get a new drag washer from smooth drag or put extra bellevile washers in the tad or tr for smoother drag or a different drag curve

I bit the bullet and purchased me a brand new TR2000 and rod.

I got this combo from FCO ($229)

Rebel Sports also had them stocked with this combo($249)

Marine deals had a similar setup for a bit cheaper with this combo ($199).

Cant wait to take this baby out for a spin now. Smile
