My wife & I will be visiting (mainly Northland) in March '24 and are looking for recommendations for campsites with walking access to fishing. I like to fish first and last light and will leave her to sleep in the campervan. I am looking for trout or coarse fishing between Aukland and maybe Cambridge for a few days. Then we head North for a couple of weeks. Trout fishing would be great to find in Northland but I am open to sea fishing from rocks or wharves etc. Thanks

Northland is by far the worst region for trout fishing in the whole country, made worse by the loss of Kai Iwi Lakes thanks to a decision by Kaipara District Council. There are a few options which are described on the F&G website, but saltwater fishing is a better option.

Yip what MB said. Northland does have some pretty special wharf and rock fishing. You might want to get a 10kg-15kg travel rod and reel. Shimano has some good options that pack into your suitcase.

Thanks guys. I will be bringing a rod suitable for rock fishing. What happened at Kai Iwi lakes? it was on my shortlist.

Wow. It's sad to lose a fishery. On the other hand I live in an area in Canada where my local lake has a complete ban because of an endangered stickleback. (A small minnow like fish) so I do understand.
As of today would the Kai Iwi lakes be worth fishing at all? I don't need to catch lots of fish, just need beautiful natural surroundings with at least a chance of a catch

I don't think so, any remaining trout would have likely died of old age and there are no other species in the lakes of interest to the sports fisherman, unless huge eels are your thing.
