Going further down the food chain now. Last time it was crabs and now its prawns but hey when in Rome do as the Romans do as they say.

Whitifisho kindly put me onto the fact that you can catch prawns in the Swan River over here so after a bit of research over the last week my lady and I headed down to a likely spot last night armed with a prawn net, a bottle of wine and a torch. Whitifisho suggested dragging a drag net for the little blighters but that sounded far too wet so used a dip net instead.

Luckily there was a local there with his kids who gave me some much needed advice on how to spot and net the prawns as they are incredibly quick and just shoot out of the net if you dont know what you are doing.

With Ruth doing the spotting and me the netting we managed to get a few in the bin before the run tapered off. Only 13 caught but we were happy with our first effort and are looking forward to lunch today. Excellent fun but not as relaxing as the crabbing.

I netted one of the below fish at the same time as a prawn and it spiked me when I tried to free it. I quickly found out that it was not like a std NZ snapper spike as it was a baby "cobbler" which has venomous spines. Bled like a *******, swelled up and hurt like hell for over an hour before it settled down. These apparently normally sit on the bottom and cause real trouble for anyone who steps on them.

Also went crabbing on the Swan again last weekend on Saturday evening and picked up five good crabs again. Hey, I know its not XOS Snap and Kingies but its better than nothing and we enjoy it.

XOS snapper spawn on the gravel on inside of Garden Island near the wharf at the right time of year and there are mulloway to be caught at Point Walter or the Narrows bridge. Have fun.

Hi Alan

Enjoying your reports.  Keep them coming!  I sympathise with the pain from the venomous fish.  I once had a grandaddy hapuka spike me in the knuckle.  I was in agony for 2 or 3 hours.  Maybe hot water would help?  It does with stingray barbs.

Cheers
Geoff

Thanks Geoff - my targets seem to be getting smaller and smaller - started on herring, moved to crabs and now prawns! What next - sea lice maybe?

The prawns were very tasty for lunch and we are hitting the crabs again tonight - quite addictive.

Another five good crabs last night. Yumm  - but do miss those Gulf snapper. Hard to buy fresh fish here in WA and very expensive (A$60/kg for snapper fillets!)
