Hi all!!

My first time on Forum.... What im after is a Low cost (within reason) rod for casting around bouys, markers etc in the Bay of islands (home)

Have done a bit of popping in the past, but never with a great setup. Just use whatever I have on the boat that will work.

I do my fair share of Jigging and use a Okuma VS80a reel with 37kg Braid, with a 5'6 Berkley dropshot 37kg stick.... a broomstick in the way of atempting to cast!

I would like a rod I could chuck the VS80a onto for popping from time to time, and maybe even use off rocks/boat with my baitrunner for general fishing.

$120-170 get me something?

saw a van steel popper rod at yeehaa today was around the 380 mark not to bad for a start

Maybe a kilwell jellytip could surfice? Theres a few @ H&F in Kerikeri tht might be suitable for the money you want to spend?

Yeah love those Jellytips grafite over glass, got a few of em, even made two in the late 80's... they are still beaut performersApprove
 
And the Fin-Nor Offshore are wicked too...Give them ago, middle of the road pricing, very similiar layout and action to a Penn 850SS Powerstick, but no comparison in lift...tiz quite a gorilla of a rod, I am really enjoying it, but can't wait to get something big on it. Wink

Thought id let u know what i got! and cheers for the help, grabbed a 5-25kg Ugly stik - Black tiger, from hunting and fishing in Kerikeri, now i want the new Baitrunner 12000 i saw in there! wont nd 2 change 2 vs-80 to popper then!

I have a jelly tip 15-24kg.... i put fuji Alconites on it for braid...will do the job nicely...would be good for the things you want to do and a good match to the okuma....7 foot 3.Not for sale,just a comment.
Whoops ,just noticed you got the ugly stick.

have the same rod mate, caught some great fish on it to, I am going to run one this year for marlin but wont be changing the guides, be a bit of fun.

Did you have the standard Aluminium oxide guides or the hard chrome guides?Mine is the original pink one( some say gay but i think its jolly LOL)....The spinning guides were the ones i replaced but it can be used with fixed and overhead reels...Those grey ones are not too good...had on my pink pathers(like rocky 2 lbg) rods but replaced them with fuji Alconites...Very nice guides.I was demonstrating here how its a dual spine....But i will use it for poppers now and braid...those grey ones wont live long with braid or the hard chrome guides either.The rod bends beautifully and a lot for 15-24 and so suits braid i reckon but has the grunt near the graphite butt.Winkusing a spheros 14000 FB with mine.Good luck BA for the marlinThumbs Up

A mate of mine has a jelly tip and I have used it a few times. Seems to be a really good value for money entry level popping rod.

A bit higher in the market, I am fan of the Shimano Carynx Kaibutsu range - not sure if they are available in NZ?. These things perform beyond their price bracket and I have no hesitation in using a Kaibutsu Surface Monster as my main heavy Pe8-12 back up rod. Although it casts like a broomstick(it's not me it is the rod!), it is a very good stopper of large fish. As they did with the excellent Jigwrex range, Shimano has become something of a star in the value for money stakes for serious marine game rods.
