Hey,

Just wondering what people think of this reel?  Would it be suitable for catching kingfish off the rocks?

I have seen it for $70, is this a o.k price?

Thanks

No, a decent king would waste that reel.

Nobody has ever come up with a great idea after a second bottle of water.

Really, whys that?  What would happen to it?  Can you recommend any other reels that arn't to expensive that would suit fishing off the rocks for kingfish?

Why's that? The reel is an entry level boat reel. The casting capabilities and drag of the Seaboy reel will be way under par for that sort of fishing.  In short, the kingi will waste your arse.

To catch kingfish off the rocks you'd need to be looking for a couple of things.

For livebaiting, a Penn Formula 15 or the eqivalent  Shimano - essentially a 12-15kg lever drag.

For casting out off the rocks, a Penn eggbeater (9000 series) , or equivalent Shimano.

mmmmm i have an awesome video of Erick the guru when he was at penn, i wish i could post the pics cause the fish he got on the Penn seaboy were awesome.

but as bender has said save a bit more and buy a reel designed for the job because sure as little green apples you will hook a goody and the reel will not be suitable to stop it and a fish with a few hundred meters of line on it will not last long alive

and from memory the little sea boy was designed for no more than 10kg line. there are other bigger penns etc and trademe is worth a look.

Actually as much as I am loathed to admit it, the father inlaw landed a 18kg fella (kingie) on one off the mercs with questionable aged 20lb mono and unserviced since the day he bought it god knows how long ago, while my trusty shiny silver beauty (Saltist) managed sweet F all... I was spitting tacs.
Although it did take him nearly 30 odd minutes oh and it was from a boat not off the bricks.

Hi John Flett..... Bender is right.... even though ive seen seaboys land yellowfin they are now mass produced in china for a bowl of rice hence the reason you can get one $70......

the little penn seaboy is a good reel, it will catch fish. but the boys are right it's not suited to that. Twice now ive had the drag wounded as tight as it will go and fish had peeled off line no problems untill bust off, MR ray in the picture took ages to catch as the reteive is soooo slow on those little penns.

The reason i use one is if the kids drop it over the side it dont matter, and it's of a quality that it might catch a good fish.

cheers Wefaknis

I think the point here is you can catch decent fish on low level or even poorly serviced reels. It is just that you wont do so consistantly for long. The Seaboy is only rated at 10kg and will perform ok if you treat it ok. For the average guy (like me) chances are if you hook a big grunty king off the rocks you will spook it into haring off into the distance, if you crank up the drag to try and stop it - things could turn nasty, If you dont he will get you down into the bad stuff at the bottom of the sea.

I have caught kings on some entry level gear, the fish were small - keepable at the time and the reels have got them in, one time after 4 rats the drag went kind of lumpy. I have also caught a reasonable king - almost 30lbs - off the rocks on good gear and it came in no problem at all, a Seaboy would have managed it no problem.

My kids have 4 Seaboys that have perform well for them, all have caught the odd eagle ray.

Would I buy one for kings of the rocks?

Nah.
