Hey there team, I didn't know where to post this, but though as its spring and everyone is possibly in the throes of sprucing the house up for summer I though id pass on this bit of info i just discovered. 

So I recently had to replace a portion of the ceiling in our bathroom at home.  Im a dab hand with jib, so no big deal.  I got busy with work and so when it came to repainting I asked my wife to head to the local paint trade store and get some new bathroom ceiling paint.

Well when she got home with the paint I was a little blown away by the price of $123.49 for 4ltrs.   Dulux Wash and Wear +plus Kitchen and Bathroom paint.   I put it down to that paint prices must have sky rocketed in the last few years and went ahead and painted the ceiling. 

Well I just happened to google for the paint and low and behold the price at Bunnings is $77, and that's not on sale, yet my wife was told she was given a discount at the local trade paint store????Shocked

So the price for the exact same tin of paint is nearly double that of what you buy from a regular hardware store. I did a bit of googling and turns out that Dulux is well known for this practice of charging multiple times the RRP at its trade stores. In the UK some products are sold at 3x the RRP when sold at a trade store.   People have tried contacting Dulux in regards to this practice but they have refused to respond. 

So watch out team, if your looking to get paint or decking oil this spring, price around.  You might find that a trade store is charging you several times what you should be charged!

Just painted the garage with Resene. Bit over $100 for 10 litres, but there was a sale on. Only needed about 5 litres for two coats of the white..Approve

mate the garage came up great !, awesome. Yip I’ve learnt to shop around online before fooling bucks out.

I remember my missus took the vw golf in for a service while I was away overseas. I normally service myself. They charged her $189 to reset the lights as they said they were aiming too high. When I got home I pointed out that on the dash there is a switch to raise and lower lights....I hope it wasn’t just because it was a woman they charged what they did.  But I’ll never send my wife to the garage for anything.

Yeah I bought the wife the paint for her birthday and she is having a lovely time. She has started on our other garage now too.. Hmm I have a five bay hay barn which could do with a paint, but I might have to wait for her next birthday.

Yeah I bought the wife the paint for her birthday and she is having a lovely time. She has started on our other garage now too.. Hmm I have a five bay hay barn which could do with a paint, but I might have to wait for her next birthday.  


 
You are a truly great husband and an inspiration to all of us Mr Moritz. I think I'll buy my wife some sheep shears for her birthday

As an ex Dulux Trade centre manager I can confirm that they don’t discount to retail customers. They are set up specifically for trade customers and have agreements with retail resellers that they won’t compete with them on retail products like Wash and Wear.

it must be hard to compete against the big shed brands as a retailer. You would hope you have a exclusive arrangement with your supplier. 

After doing up 5 houses one brand I don’t go near is British paints. Back in the day when feature walls were a thing I did a Aubagine one. I bought British paints as best price and painted over white and it took me 4 coats which cost more than the hall feature wall where I did one coat with resenes paint. Resenes cost a few bucks more but was cheaper in the end by a long way let alone the saved time. Similar scenario with a external paint job.

Mr Moritz did you use a undercoat cause that garage finish is tops.

Yea as you said Reel Deal, a cheap can of paint dont make it cheap in the end.   

Have to say I really liked the consistency of the Dulux.  That being said it said on the can "usually only takes one coat".   It was a white going over an admittedly slightly yellowing white celling paint, yet still took two coats and its still a fraction patchy if you look closely.  Not bad paint, but wont be rushing back to buy in other words.

Mr Moritz did you use a undercoat cause that garage finish is tops. Nope. I water blasted the colour steel, then wash down with strong detergent then plastic pot pad for any grime spots, waterblast clean. The few bare patches spot sprayed with galvanised primer and then 2 coats paint. Had to wear sunglasses as white was so blinding

Umm I'm pretty sure $77 buys you a 2l can at bunnings not 4l.
Paint is expensive, wash n wear k&b is very expensive.
If your ceiling had yellowed it's likely been painted in an oil based paint... If so what you've put on will fall off.

For bathroom ceilings I'd recommend aalto satin acrylic enamel or paint plus armour guard satin.
I go through pellets of dulux knb lowsheen, but only through the walls on the house and use a satin enamel on bathroom ceilings.
Reason is it's an interior/exterior product therefore 100% designed to get wet. Lowsheen can polish when wiped, a satin enamel wont.
