Hey y'all,

Ive always enjoyed casting the odd spinner out while the family was surfacasting however recently we have turned to rock fishing. Last year I purchased a shimano backbone 8"6' and fin nor OFS7500 and landed my first two kings ever; one rat and one 9.5 kg(some may call that a rat aswell) both of which I caught off the same stick bait.

Anyway what I ask is, does anyone have any suggestions for gear I should carry which would help make my trips more confortable(ie gimbals) and successful. I currently have a couple of poppers, R2C stick baits and yesterday picked up a couple of waxwings.

Nice one.
Now you have had a taste for it you will be hooked for ever.
Keep it all pretty basic if your walking aorund on the rocks, a backpack with a few stickbaits, hooks and defintely a set of split ring pliers, some swivels and split rings and you should be away. Just run a basic gimbal, daiwa do a nice one that will packup down to bugger all and does the job well.
Plenty more gear you could carry but better save some space to carry out that big king.

I spent a lot of time on the rocks last summer (what there was of it), throwing stick baits out whilst live baiting KY for kings.

Not many kings turned up, it was a very slow season really, but what i did learn was to just keep on casting, as the strikes I got and fish landed (only just bigger than rats to 15 kg) were completely unseen before they took the lure in massive strikes. 2 hrs constant casting and suddenly, as the arms were about to drop off, whoosh, bang, screaming reel wide awake oh **** that was awesome now don't want to lose that expensive lure.Big smile

If I'd relied on waiting for the fish to turn up before casting at them I doubt I'd have had any hookups.

Oh, and take some berley to bring the bait fish around to attract the kings, a 5 kg bomb can last a few hours.

In one of the larger shops today to pick up some 300gm jigs for a mid week (day off work ) trip. The number of poppers available blew me away. 
Looks really interesting will have to give it a go Thumbs Up
Cant beat hunting and Fishing in N.Z

Excuse the high-jack, but I'm keen on giving it a go, are there any local Auckland spots worth trying out, even for a ky for the smoker?

^ perfect advise, I get to travel a bit with work and each week its a diferent Island, they are all really fishy and I hate seeing fish with out gear to target them. That being said I have to compromise, and pack a small amount of gear on each trip. 2 piece rod ( necessary for the flying pencil involved with travel), a few poppers, from smallish to large cup, a few stick baits again from small to large and spare swivels, split rings and leader. Including reel it fits in a small 10-15 litre carry on bag, apart from rod. I keep the lures rigged to reduce carrying xtra containers, the leader and swivels, split rings are for bust offs and so far it has meant lots of fun and some steep learning.
 
Never cast large cup popper into lagoon with dirty water!! Bronzies exploding all over Cubera popper induces large amounts of adrenalin, seratonin followed by Dopamine as the reality of loosing said lure sets in :(
