I brought a Manson Supreme 35lb for El Donna 24 months ago and I am  having issues every once in a while when setting the bloody thing. 

 These are meant to be the bees Knees in setting but if we get anywhere close to Sea Grass or rubble in 15knts +  then it just keeps dragging and dragging and is very hard to set.  Im pretty particular about how I set and certainly look to lay it out and then set instead of dumping it in a heap on top of the anchor.

Im all Chain, Typically set 5:1 + and run a short Chain section to Swivel to Chain arrangement.

Example - Was in paradise bay the other day, anchored in close near the sea Grass in 3m. layed out 60m of chain , wind got up and could not get a set. Bloody pain in the arrrse re setting at Midnight! 


Has anyone else had any issues, advice . Might end up keeping it as a spare and get a Rocna as apparently they will set where most wont. :)\

I lost my Sarca which was excellent and couldn't get another quickly so changed to a Rocna. This dragged in anything over 12-15 knots. I tried setting it in the Mangawhai estuary where the water was clear and it seemed to sit on its side and not be able to dig in. I've changed back to a Sarca and this sets perfect every time and no issues in any wind.

Lance, my first reaction is that 35 lb is not big enough for your boat which with the fly bridge has a lot of windage.
I have a 9 metre lunch without a flying bridge and use 15 metres of 10mm chain and a 35lb Manson plough and have very few problems.
I have looked at the Rocna and Manson websites and I think your 35lb anchor is undergunned.

35lb is correct under MNZ40A for an 11m LOA planing hull with a windage height of 2.5m. Actual weight required calculates to 15.75kg so a little under 35lbs. Theoretically you could have rope and a 3M chain pendant and use that anchor. 

If the boats measures closer to 12m LOA and has a windage height around 3.5M off the water (incl flybridge) then calculations would suggest a high holding power anchor (like the Manson etc) of 21kg's. With an all chain setup I would have expected that anchor to be OK. Having said that, I still have Tagit's original fixed head plow anchor on her bow after nearly 20 years and 10,000+ hours of sea miles and it doesn't drag unless the bottom is very bad holding and the wind is howling. I can tell you the three places that has happened in all my days at sea. Two at Gt Barrier and one small spot by Motihue where the papa rock is just under the sand.
We have had mansons, deltas, rocnas etc and found them all pretty fine, but I still rate the old fixed head (not swivel head) plow on an all chain setup.

That's funny. I had completely the opposite experience with those 2 anchors.
Buggered if I know...

what size is chain? nz made or chinese?  I have 25lb plough with 8mm chain 16 metres with 100m warp on a 7m yacht,use to drag with all chain as could not figure how much was let out as not marked at 5m intervals.

my 8mm nz chain is a lot heavier than the 10mm chinese chain that was onboard


5m of water i let out all chain + 20m of warp(4 x depth of water)

Tagit ,  Motihue where the papa rock is just under the sand.  snapper bay?thats where we dragged
