Geoff hi, can I ask what are the results you are expecting to achieve with this style of head.

Me not Geoff!!

But I'll answer that question anyway, as best I can.

The blunt nose lure head is super easy to run because it holds the water very well, they also create a lot of commotion and noise but run straight so they are easy for the fish to catch. The offset leader hole puts a lot of pressure on the bottom two thirds of the lure face which i believe helps to keel the lure in the upright position so a pegged hook rig in the point up orientation will always be presented in the perfect position for a clean hook up.

There are probably other points that others might raise too but that's my take on this style of lure and it is probably why the 5.5 Zuker has been so successful and so relentlessly copied.

I don't think the Zuker ZM-5.5 was specifically designed to achieve those things.  Zuker have a big scooped face lure (aka kona head) with an offset leader tube called the ZM-5 and I'd bet the ZM-5.5 was a ZM-5 that had its nose chopped square after too many dings were taken out of the scooped nose by fish (or the boat).  The Zuker 3.5 is probably a ZM-3 modified in the same way.  Cutting a flat face into damaged lures is common practice in Mexico and some other locations where lures haven't always been as easy to come by.  You obviously get a different action to the original lure but it prolongs the useful life of the lure and clearly has worthwhile fish appeal as the flat faced versions are now being commercially produced.

Sorry Murph it was you the question was originally aimed for, blond moment.
Interesting. I was interested in the thoughts towards self keeling.
If this is a benefit, are there other lures that do this and if so why not more.
Has this been done to cup faced lures?

I think that the Kilwell Pacific range had an offset leader hole cup face and there are, or were some time ago, a great many scoop faced "swimmers" with offset leader holes too.

I wouldn't personally bother with it on anything other than a 90 degree flat face or a swimmer style. All of my angle faced lures are keel weighted which makes them very stable.

I've not keel weighted a cup faced lure as I have a feeling that it may actually have an undesired effect of inducing spin or corkscrewing, which would be very bad.

Thanks ,
In thinking about that cup shape corkscrewing which would definetly be a by product of its shape the counteraction of the keel weight has to be increased substantially and any other features that also encourage this centereing function would be advantageous, thinking out loud here.
I have seen it in poppers but have you seen angled cup faced lures?

Murph - The Pacific Baitfish was the one with the cupped face and offset leader hole, very successful lure in its own right, it was subsequently reskirted with a blacky/purple inner and dark mackerel coloured (hard to describe colour) outer skirt by Roger Parsons and Barney MacGibbon (Leigh Distributors in Whangarei) in the early 1990's and the Mrs Palmer was born.

Three heads...A Pacific Baitfish in Fruit Salad (has had 10+ marlin, and 2 other Mr's Palmers. One belongs to another poster..a right plonker, the other mine.
Note all heads are different and the 2 lures that have had marlin are chipped in exactly the same place!!

Roy - when the Pacific Baitfish lure first came on the market there was 2 skirt colour options a dark bluey purple and a lighter bluey one with some orange in it. It was a number of years later that they brought out the baitfish head with the fruit salad skirts. Initially the Pacific lure in the fruit salad skirt was the Eye Catcher which was a flat faced centre leader holed lure which was and is still a very popular and successful lure. If memory serves me correctly I think you have posted about this lure before or was it Adam.

Here's what my baitfish looks like after last season. The biggest chip I've filled with araldite.
I have a replacement on order.

Going back to the offset leader discussion, a fellow member has leant me the use of a lure to make some noise. the head is 125mm long and has an offset leader hole. Be interesting to see how this runs.

Those that say it can't be done are being overtaken by those doing it.
