I know jigs with lumo on them receive some charging from sunlight but it's nothing compared to charging them with a flash or UV light prior to dropping them. Has anyone tried this?

I've been experimenting in a darkened room and the glow is really strong after a few flashes. Haven't had a chance to try it yet for real but it should work well at the deeper depths.

Jimi the Fish and I have been playing around with a flash light made for charging lumo lures etc.  Yes you are right about greater glow compared to just sunlight.  Jimi is very convinced of the improvement with the flash light.  Some Japanese jig designers are less than convinced with luminous jigs. They rely more on the jig's vibrations to produce hits.  I believe that there can only be benefits having some luminous so long as it is not too much.

Jimi the Fish is probably NZ's best jig fisherman and he often custom paints his Zest jigs.  Favourite colour?  Yep....BLACK!

Have found colour very selective with kingies anyway.Have been jigging around shallow reefs and always found pink/white more effective at those locations and the darker colours (including black) more effective on the deeper reefs eg over 60 mtrs.just my observations anyway.

Black gives a much more detailed sillouette and in deep water with little light it stands to rerason black would show up better.
On Lumo. i think strips of lumo work best, my reason for this is stressed fish show up darker bands across their body (luminicence maybe), ever noticed when you bring in a small snapper it often has darker bands across its body.
Thats some pretty neat paintwork on those jigs Chris are they some of Jimis custom models.

Yeah those jigs are indeed from the palate of Jimi. The jigs with the lumo stripes are actually lumo underneath and he has masked off the stripes and black painted over top.

I have experimented with a shoe box lined with foil and a torch mounted inside it seemed to work quite well. That was in Aus where it was a bit harder to get a hit, here in NZ i would not bother there is that many Kings it is not worth the effort.

My daughter came back from the RedShed with a keyring UV torch from some sort of " Spy Set" -  She misplaced it a couple of days later and somehow I found it had turned up in my tacklebox (the last place she'd think of lookingEvil%20Smile)   I have to say that even with its small size, the UV charge is brighter and longer lasting on the lumo beads I tested it with.

If she ever finds it, I'll go and buy my own Spy SetThumbs%20Up

Ooooh, I better go check out the "spy pen" that my little girl received in her cereal box which has a light thingy to show up invisible ink.Tongue
