After losing my third JD trying to lift it out of the water I've decided I need to get myself a landing net. Ideally it would fold down small enough to fit in a pocket, be so light it carries itself.

I quite like those ones with the rubber netting to avoid hooks etc getting tangled up.

Anyone got a net they use from the rocks and would recommend.

I don't have any for walking with, I usually tuck the gaff into the tissue of the dorys gob to insure it doesn't get off.  They are so good at getting away, bit of a hart stopping moment watching good tucker swim away

I got a decent one from Rebel (think it was a kilwell) a couople of years ago. Much easier to net snaps than gaff them (in my experience anyway) and gives you the option of catch and release. Also good for undersize kings, can let them go without them thrashing around on the rocks and damaging themselves.
 
Mesh is the rubber stuff. Including the head it's 2.3 meters long, but the head comes off for transport. The handles is about 1.65m and did collapse to about half thatt..until an encounter with some hefty Kawau snapper bent it.

I find my ganson pretty good. Head comes off, was extendable but salt build up and leverage pressure keep it open. I think all the fold head up ones, like the trout ones are hand only not extendable and don't have the rubber mesh.
Marks net is is a Rusler, nice deep rubber net but the heads not really designed to come off, although his does now.
I do not lie about fishing, I willingly participate in a campaign of misinformation.

Hey Baz, My Rusler is a model they don't make any more.  I don't think the new nets are so deep. Also they are in stainless now I think . Mine's aly, which corrodes when saltwater gets inside the tube that makes the rim which is why I have to flush it out with fresh water every time. I keep meaning to seal it up with some sealant.  But the stainless is much heavier. However thay have a huge range, I'm sure you'll find one you like.  I got in touch with the chap (Russell, of course) and he's very helpful. So if you can't fin anyone who stocks the model you're after get in touch with him.
Just had a look at the site again it seems they do aly handles and rims again. In fact they do custom made nets so mix and match telescopic handles to rubberised mesh etc.

Just picked up a rusler net too after my old net snapped.

Couldn't see anything on their website that would be long enough but Russell a ring and he made up a 3 mtres long handle that collapses down to 2 metre. The head is also detachable so pretty easy to transport. Went for a rubber net, but had the option of a deeper string net. Hoping to get some pics of it in action up at doubtless bay next week.

Been using the Black Magic telescopic net with detachable head. Very good from the bricks.
Other one I saw is a detachable fold down version from Rapala, looks reasonable for the price and great for a walk in.
Both at smartmarine.

I know this sounds common sense but when you have the fish in the net........make the landing net vertical to lift the fish up onto the rocks..therefore taking all the strain off your pole ....I have seen people try to lift the fish like they are taking a fish out of an aquarium and do a good job of bending/even snapping  their poles on good size fishLOL..esp kings......its good practice regardless of weight spec for the net/pole.Wink

Cost $200 which isn't cheap but you get what you pay for, and it looks much more durable than the cheap nets you see. Plus has a 5 year warranty. 
Yeah heading up on Wednesday morning for 'non-rocktober', just packing a mountain of gear! We'd already booked accommodation and time off work so decided we'd still head up. The fish don't know the comp's been cancelled!

Yep the net went well, unfortunately I was doing most of the netting rather than the catching.

nice wide mouth.  Hard to see how deep it is though. My old russler, which now resides at the bottom of the sea, had a good deep long net bit, enough for a a fair sized king.
