Kawakawa Bay rock fishing...

This area has some some great ledges and rock formations for a shallow bay. It might be a bit late in the season now but anyone interested in giving some feed back as to locations 1, 2 and 3 that have experienced good results here?

I myself have fished at location 3 many years ago, I did not walk right round the rock formation from memory as I chose an incoming tide that day and it was pretty choppy. I have not fished at locations 1 and 2 although they could be good?

Hi Spin,

1 it's the old orica wharf...it's a bit of a walk to get there, but we fish just off the wharf at times, but the fishing slows down about now.

2. a popular spot it gets a hammering, I have caught a few good pannies tucked in close in the boat, sheltering from the wind....

3. my pick of the spots, it a nice rock / bush walk there, you cant get there at high tide...., burley up for snapper, if ya get there at low tide you will see were the guts are.

Good luck

Cheers Wefaknis

Fished spot 2 & 3 on a few occasions with solid results of zilch. Winter though so we were gunning for any residents that might be kicking around but gets a lot of pressure so hard going.
I could imagine it'd be better at night.

Cheers all for the responses, weather looks to be wet and wild this weekend but your never know, thinking of a dash up to Orewa beach tho and clambering around some of the local ledges there, they look easy enough to get to if you can find an access point.

Please don't rain too much :o)

Hi SpinFisher,

Spot 1: Anchored up just off the old wharf back on Anzac Day and got a few good pannies from there right in close. It'd be a hard walk to get to the wharf and id say you'd probably need to do it on outgoing or low tide.

Spot 2: Have fished from the ledge many a time and have got zilch - Looks like a good spot but never done me any good.

Spot 3: Have fished from the bricks there a couple of times. Is a nice bush/rock walk and needs to be done on outgoing/low tide. Have caught a few good pannies from there previously but would be unsure how it would go with cooler water temperatures.

Good Luck Big%20smile

Hi dave. I also live in Papakura Smile I have pretty much given up on those spots round Kawakawa bay. I have had a couple of ok days at spot 2 but 9 times out of ten its pretty ordinary... not trying to put you off tho. It still beats mowing the lawns or sitting in front of the tv... or on the lap top lol.

We have fished spot 3 a number of times and got a feed most times. Fish the point to the left as you come down the stairs onto the beach, dont cast to far to  the left as the snags are a nightmare.

Cast out toward coro slightly to the right. At high tide walk back toward the stairs you came down and there will be a lil ledge/rock. Cast across the beach/water. Sometimes the snaps are on a feeding frenzy. We have creamed it a few times when that happens.

Have also seen good size kings cruising in close but couldnt hook up.

Great local spot

Yeah i had a good run at the wharf (location1) a few years back, LONG sweaty walk there with my chilly bin, salt-ice, burley, bait, rods etc haha but worth it got there and pulled up atleast 3-4kg snaps in the first 5 or 10mins and couple of great pannies after that just as the fishing died off i also got a nice kahawai and a nice walk back in waist deep water so becareful if u wanna go out there but definitly think about and plan it b4 it becomes a regional park and people slam it hard!!!

have fished all 3 and done well at 1 and 3. last christmas 2 kingis at number 1. Number 2 gets hit with alot of people fishing off there. stopped going there cos the car kept getting broken into.!
I live in papakura and go out that way every 2nd weekend. Getting bites lately but nothing to write home about. Caught 6 snapper off the rocks just before location 2 about 3 months ago. Gotta have a rod in the water to catch! Even if ya don't catch beats sitting at home watchin Fishing shows on TV!

I have caught a few ok snapper of the beach at spot 3, and kingfish up to 10kg near spot 2. The breakwater at the boat ramp is a good spot too, but its tricky to land kingis as there is a lot of sharp rocks around the wall with oysters.
