A weird and wonderful deep water oogly...

From FB; Seriously, it's one I haven't seen before, and it was caught as trawling by-catch in 360m off Eden. I asked Mark McGrouther of the Aust Museum, and Jeff Johnson of the Qld Museum.

The combined response is: "It is a species of Jellynose, family Ateleopodidae. Ateleopus occurs off the Qld & NSW coast but the species I am familiar with does not reach this size.
Another genus Ijimaia is rarely found off the southern coast, but does not seem a good match for this fish."

Looking up the information on Jellynose Fish, there is very little known about them. They grow to about 950mm, although the fisherman has caught them to possibly 1.1m. Jellynose are deepwater fish (up to 600m) that live on or near the bottom.

Blerk! Dead
That looks definitely 'undersized' and should, therefore, be thrown back overboard asap, dead or alive. I'd then raise the anchor and scarper off to somewhere, anywhere, they aren't.

I prefer your other 'Catch-of-the-Day'. Embarrassed
