Looking at a property that has a few hectares of old man pine and some more about 25 years old trimmed and ready to go. Problem is it’s not worth cutting down. Cheaper to buy treated pine than milling it and sending away and getting it delivered back.

Only value firewood? Why would anyone plant it?

Can be used for internal use untreated but that’s limited. I liked the idea of doing some old world split wood fences and painting with sump oil but that only lasts a couple of years so a lot of effort for nothing...

So back to cutting down beautiful straight large trees to make second rate firewood.

Shame people don’t plant Rimu Totara instead. Takes twice as long but 100x the value.

Pine trees are a pain in the bum. My little lifestyle block had them planted almost right around my 1 hectare property, with a couple of rows thrown in for good measure. @4 years later a third of them are still there. They were planted too close together. They don't do your pasture any good either - there's a reason they grow so quick. Unless there is a large stand of similar tress nearby with easy access you may find it difficult to find someone to take them. I think pine trees must have been the 80's version of emus for lifestyle block owners. I use mine for firewood

emus hahaha.
Someone mentioned biofuel option for home power generation?

As if the pines aren’t bad enough on their own the mass of wilding pines are a disgrace. The original planter needs to take 100% responsibility of wilding pines on others property.

Yip pine needles poison the soil under themselves to keep competitors numbers down.

I looked at the carbon off set value. And was shocked to find the gov qualifies if you re plant chopped forest with pines again no native qualify. This ignorance could lead people to cut reguvinating native bush to plant even more pines to qualify.

Unfortunate for sure.

And maybe if you plant natives and want to use them, you'll probably need an arm load of resource consent paperwork, made from pine.

ok been checking out the wood gasifiers in the US. These guys are making wood powered cars and trucks. Work.

The interesting ones power large generators that power farms and excess power goes into the grid. Hmmm that pine might have a use yet....

well guys pine is the wood you buy for decking and building ,so if you have a plantation that is worth milling ,sale it has standing trees. not a lot in it for you, may be 100 dollars per tree standing but then the buyers pay for cutting and removal. be shore you look into the sales aggrements . as they need access to the property.

I bought 10 acres in town here 3 years ago and it had old man pine (untrimmed).
Asked a bunch of people if they wanted them and in the end got $7500 for them standing.
Went through several people before I found someone who screws around with small amounts.
Pine Price was high and we were lucky I guess.
I have some stumps for sale if anyone wants them?
Dig your own.

Wood powered electricity plants are all over the US. Apparently, if they cut and burned every tree in the US that would provide only one year of power. Not at all sustainable which makes those plants not at all what they are cracked up to be. However, might be an ok way for you to get rid of trees you don't want.

thanks Derek, yeah sounds to be good to be true. I see issues straight off the ones online use mainly wood pellets and chips so there is a process time and cost that needs to be factored in.

Ideal set up as wood gasifiers generate a lot of power when working maybe have for three phase county garage shed tools and solar hydro for house. Ps I have none of these but covid research at this stage)

Wow online they have a norton motor bike running off wood also tractors trucks whole towns. Very popular in the early 1900s

There used to be guys with a portable mill, who could come to your property, chop the trees and leave you with pile of timber. You could then get timber treated if required. You don't want timber with knots so lower branches should have been trimmed off as tree grows. If this hasn't been done timber will be of lower grade..

Yeah, haven't kept up with prices, but think there is a glut at the moment. But China has started to buy logs again, so maybe prices might start to rise again.

You don't want to build a log cabin on the land? Smile

Yeah cypress sawmill sells macrocarpa slabs for table tops etc..

There was talk a few year ago up here that someone was keen to put a charcoal plant in at the old kingfish farm up north and all the by product heat would go to an attached accommodation and also heat one of the pools for swimming....
I was surprised they could make charcoal out of pine pruning's but apparently it's fine.
Believe me they have a heap of pine!
This idea sounded good on the face of it because they were going to value add the pine twice in effect.
I guess there is a controlled contained burn for commercial charcoal production?

Adding value to one is great.
I watched a repeat of a program, might have been the am show or something, and winning was going on about hedging ourselves, and stop selling raw material to foreigners, and stop putting all of our eggs in one particular basket..and I agree with him.
No more wooden furniture made in China out of nz sourced logs?

Meantime, the pipe and hollow sections plant at the steel mill,is looking to be axed...cheap imports..
