It will be interesting to see how all of these fisheries regulation breaches are dealt with on an international level. The chinese seem to have responded with threatening trade if they don't get to do whatever they want... 

Poor little NZ is going to struggle somewhat on this larger scale protection I fear. Stuck between a rock and a hard place, we certainly dont have the self sustained might of these super powers.

So they will face court in their own countries for breaches of the rules?why not face court in those countries where the breaches took place?  Once home 2 finger salute NZ

Pretty much, trade card was a low blow. Needs to be enforced more by bigger international parties than NZ. As big as we feel, we are pretty small in the grand scale of things

In reality there nothing to stop China or any other country that fishes to come down here and illegally fish,ok we have laws but how do we physically stop them,Air force can fly over report positions,our 4 Frigates? can apprehend 4 fishing vessels meanwhile the rest carries on fishing.Sure we can report them to their goverments but what cost and what would the results be??Perhaps we need to become ruthless like indonesia,start blowing up vessels?
We have enough problems trying to make charges stick for our own poachers.

Yup, Again though if we adopted indonesias policy it would have long term issues in other areas. Considering most offending vesssels were chinese if the **** hit the fan would any of the other super powers come to our aid and take on China if push came to shove... I think not in all honesty. 

 The international waters thing is a pretty big cesspit. The intentions of the Chinese GOVT and fishing corporations I felt was pretty self explanatory when they subsidised over 400 new boats to hit the Tuna harder than ever after world reports show a massive decline and a fishery that may well be passed a point of recovery. Scary stuff.

Yes, the Chinese play of flooding the south pac with boat was to establish a catch history, so when the inevitable quotas on the fishery are established, they will get the lions share of that. China thinks long term, more so than pretty much all other nations.
However, any fishing boat caught illegal fishing here, no matter it's flag, should be impounded and destroyed I feel. There really is no excuse for fishing in closed waters etc these days, it is not like navigation is done by the stars these days after all.

It's more the illegal fishing operations that are of concern CA. Those extra boats out there trying to establish a catch history may well be all thats needed to tip the whole thing over the edge though unfortunately, 

I guess there forward thinking on food has something to do with many mouths to feed though eh?

Partly the many mouths HP, but mostly I would imagine it is a long term investment in a lucrative industry. The trouble is that any efforts to exert controls over international waters will run smack bang into a solid wall of international opposition. Every navy, and every government, in the world would immediately nix that, for fear of controls of access too or through water are now international waters.
It's a massive problem, one I strongly suspect will not be easily solved until it is far far too late.

CA  I don't think it is as "Wild West" as you make it out.
Fishing for tuna in this area is under the rules set by the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission.
China is a signatory and member of the Commission.
The 2 Chinese vessels were boarded by an NZ patrol in international waters  - as allowed by a rule made by the Commission. If the vessels were not registered with the Commission they probably are not reporting their catch.  

There are sanctions for IUU (Illegal, unreported and unregulated) fishing boats.  If China do not explain and rectify the registration etc then NZ can apply for these vessel to be put on the Blacklist of vessels, which means they are banned from using any ports in the region.  The cost of not being registered outweigh the benefit.

Good on NZ for getting out there and inspecting boats. If the US want to help in the region then their navy could chip in.

Yeah, I know about all that, still, it is pretty iffy a lot of what goes on out here. Interesting how China tied up such a huge chunk of the central pacific all for itself....certainly made the US sit up and take notice I suspect! 😊
