Hi there I have just watched a you tube clip on how to splice hollow core braid and serve by tackle direct on youtube.
In the demonstration he says that the serve which pretty much looks like a PR knot is 100% and feeding the top shot into the hollow braid is just a backup.
It seems to me you might as well just use solid braid as backing and use a PR knot to join them together am I missing something or is there no real point in paying for hollow braid and splicing needles?
Thanks

Are you sure it's not the other way around; the splice is 100% and the serve is just backup?

I've recently started to use hollow on a couple of my bigger setups; 65lb hollow with 100lb leader spliced in, then I serve it for all of maybe 1cm with some very light braid, you can't even feel it go through the guides when it's wet and I have pulled on it hard enough to break the mainline and the splice didn't let go.

I've tried pulling on a splice without any serve at all and it was solid as a house, the reason you serve is a. to stop the end of the hollow getting messy and b. to stop someone/something inadvertently pushing the hollow back up the leader, which will very quickly un-splice it, especially if wet.

Thanks for the info, have a look at the youtube clip and see what you think. the serve is probably 100mm long and very PR knot like.

Ara,  that serve is good but a dab of Zap CA glue on the rissuto knot he finishes the serve with will stop it unravelling.

Hollw is very expensive, as you say use solid braid  and add a topshot with loop to loop connection,  100% strength
