hi,

after a cheap but decent spin reel as a back up for popping and trolling so that i can have 2 rigged sets ready for when i get smacked on the reef.

i already have a good quality shimano set as my number one popper set and a jm/jigstar as my jigging set but i just want a decent back up that can get thrashed when needed.

i tried to find the stats on the daiwa opus bull on the net, but they did not include max drag rating. can anyone confirm that they have 15kgs of drag?

i also like the spare spool option included.

what are the comparable options with enough grunt in that cheaper price range please available in nz? ideas? cheers.

The stats are on daiwa website 33lb so yep 15kg drag.
Allan a couple of things to consider, I also have jm/jigstar artillery to jig now but prior to that was running a saltist 6500h. Has performed brillant slaying ranfurly kings 20-30kg, the high ratio (6.2:1)
which, while not ideal for jigging didn,t seem to matter except maybe in the deep stuff with heavy jigs. I don,t do bugga all casting/topwater but reckon this would be a mean back up and slightly
better than the bull. Lighter, stronger, more features etc..
If you have drama,s buying retail in raro then try ebay $2hundy usd for the saltist, $150 for the bull. gd luck

a member mentioned the pflueger salt reel, just new to nz from berkley/pure fishing. on you tube it says they have 25kg of drag, but on the berkley website it says 11kgs of drag, this is a big difference. many people got one, and if so has anyone scale tested its drag?  looks like it would be in the same price range as the opus bull.

thanks

Allan if you are looking for a cheap, reliable spinning reel just pay $20-$40 extra and get a Fin Nor 6500 or upwards. They are heavy but infinitely more durable and better quality than the Opus Bull. The drag is stronger too and more importantly, so is the shaft. I had an Opus Bull, first the casing shattered with a knock on the rocks on its first use, got it fixed/sealed, next the bail arm starts playing up (flicked back when casting) and finally the shaft bent twice  (got it straightened and then happened again) when I had the misfortune to hook stingrays. In short, I paid around $100 worth of repairs before throwing it in the bin. Pure ****e mate, maybe ok for freshwater carp fishing. The Opus Sea Bull may be better quality, but it's more expensive. Fin Nor - you won't look back...
