Thinking of getting a good stick bait rod and reel for top water king fishing in close to the shore ,
Heard Diawa saltega are the best even better than the new shimano stellas.
What is the best sized reel , braid weight to suit this type of fishing and also rod selection.

id say the new stellas are on par with the saltigas, the saltys certainly seem tougher but you don't exactly here of stellas busting... I go with stellas because Ive had nothing but good times with them, never owned a salty tho, both are more than capable for nz kings, its up to how much you want to spend...

Reel size - saltiga 4000-5000 or stella 8000-10000, high ratio retrieve models (H for the Saltiga range, ie 5000H)
60-80lb braid (casting braid better)
Rod - approx PE5-6 rating. Carpenter,Ripple fisher,Smith,Fisherman,MC works,Synit,Jigging Master....all make rods of suitable "pedigree" to match a Saltiga or Stella reel.
You can go heavier or lighter, depends on your prefence.
my opinion only, counts for sweet FA

Good thread, Im interested in getting into a bit os stickbaiting especially when spring rolls on and the kings will be higher up in the water column.
What about the Daiwa Monster Mesh or Shimano Terez rods?

The new Quantum Boca reels are pretty nice too, and you get 2 or 3 for the price of the Japanese reels.

Cheers for the constructive feedback , gives me more to think about, looked at both reels and some rods but need to be sure before committing as a good set up is more expensive than my good jigging gear !!
Missus is flying to Japan tomorrow so If i can decide on which reel is the best might see if its cheaper there

Catalina's are pretty sick reels too, something like a 4500H
Basically a saltiga less one bearing.

I got one of these off e bay usa(pretty cheap, even with postage) for a mates 5oth birthday present.......Didnt like the drag washers much...changed them for carbontex and it was sweet as....Think it was the 80 size ....not the baitrunner one and put 80 pound braid on it.......Felt nice to me.......Mate was happy with it.
Posters question.......Depends on your budget and if you really like stickbaiting!
I used to use my stella 10,000 on my rocky 2 to start out.....I had faith in that rod and why wouldnt i...i caught a 22.5 kg king on it before. with a shimano 6500..........You can try with what you have and see if you like it,,,,If you do........then its time to ask the question you are now.......If its not your cup of tea....then you havent wasted your money!
Most people love it but i have known a few who cant be bothered with it.....they have bought expensive sets...only to sell later on at a big loss to themselves and a bargain to someone on here!
The sort of gear we are talking about here is not cheapWink
Once the idiots turn up..Im outta here...No time for Drama Queens.

I got a Boca 60 to use in the Sollies recently, worked very nicely for me, but having said that, it didn't have to deal with anything huge. But nice, nonetheless. The ture test will be seeing what it is like in October when I go back up there.... it is in a sealed clip-top box up there, but still, the atmosphere in the sollies soon dissolves any reel not truly bullet proof!
