Hi fellas, I'm asking what's possibly the most frequent question asked on the forum but with a twist.
I'm looking for a reel or two for the upcoming season to achieve a couple of things and am interested to hear from guys using these particular reels.

I'm definately not trying to do the age old one reel to reel them all sorta deal, I think we can agree that's near impossible.

what I do want some advice on is a reel that's suitable for kings 20kg plus that's jiggable and castable. Now obviously saltiga's and Stella's are at the top of the list with Daiwa Catalina's and shimano saragosa's close behind. What I'm really interested in is hearing from anyone that regularly uses a saragosa 10,000 and/ or a daiwa 5000/5500 sized reel and how they fare against the NZ kingie. My main concern being are they grunty enough? (Of course they are for the odd Occassion but for the big one?).

I intend to purchase a couple of reels, one for a combination of jigging which I won't be doing a lot of but want to get into a bit more and stickbaiting. And a second for live baiting and trolling , hopefully for yellowfin. A different kettle of fish all together.

At present I'm torn between a saragosa 10,000 - talica combination or one saltiga 6500 and using it for trolling also as I won't be doing a huge amount of big game stuff by any means.

I'm interested in getting good value and am not biased toward any brand in particular.

I'm interested to hear your educated thoughts... cheers.

Very diverse wish list there mate, guess you could narrow it down by deciding between Spin & OH.
If you go OH then Talica would be a good option & if you go spin the Saltiga is a far better but more expensive reel than the Sargosa.

Give it a month or so for the Okuma Metaloid spin reels to show up, they are potentially going to shake up that "not a Stella but still high end" segment of the spinning reel market, should be cheaper than a Saragosa.

Yes very, I will end up with one of each eventually and wgat I failed to add was if I go the saltiga path I'll just have to accept its not the most ideal for the troll until I pick up something else. A lot of good press about on the saragosa, I guess I'm just fishing for an excuse not to pay 1200 for one reel before taking the hit!

Nope :) That's a different kettle of fish entirely, pitched to compete directly with the Stella and Saltiga. I think they'll be a $1xxx reel.

The Metaloid is a middle of the range reel, will be available in a 55, 65 and a 90. I don't know what these correspond to in Shimano sizes but I dare say the 90 will be a big *******, 20000-ish kind of size.

From what I know so far they're a full metal reel and have a big honking drag and should be around the mid $300's to $400, aiming quite squarely at the Saragosa.

Sort of odd request and quite challenging when you throw in trolling at end, as hard enugh to go between top water and jigging.
I've run over last few years as a knock about spin reel an opus bull 4500 on diawa monster mesh pe 5-7 spin jig rod. Has done well and is similar size to your stella 10k and diawa 5k reels mentioned. Has accounted for kings over 20 kg and I do troll with it mainly skippy lures, have not had a marlin on it but capacity would be main concern there running as much pe 5 as can put on it just in case. My top water reel of choice is shimano 10k sustain, also proven on 20 kg plus kings but probably again not capacity for marlin or large tuna
Yellowfin in larger sizes are very tough fish.
So if looking at spin and jigging and bit of trolling or live baiting in mind I'd maybe go for larger on one of the spin reels in at least one of your purchases, and lighter 10k size pe 5 on the other.
Talica would be choice if doing more trolling and live-baiting but then i love jigging with spin and versality of having same reel or as a back up for topwater.

Get a Shimano Twin Power PG with a JM16000 spool. Use the standard spool for jigging and the JM16000 spool with 60lb braid for top water and trolling/ live baiting.
I sold all my heavy trolling gear and use the above reel with a Saltiga spin jig rod for trolling and swap to a popper rod when the need arise.
So light and easy to use in a small boat or even a big one for that matter.

Thanks guys all good insight, the 16000jm spool sounds like an interesting addition and probably a nice size for a couple of applications. keep it coming!

if you were to get a large jm (pe7 pe8) then that will cover your jigging livebaiting and trolling. there has been guys catch marlin on pe 4 so a reel twice the size will easy handle a yellow fin.

Agree with homebouys post. But good sized yellowfin are tough fish might not run as long but will seriously test 24 kg nylon on a equivalent game reel 50 size. So yeah pe 4 will do job sometimes but haven't had experience on big yfin but seen few on nylon. Depends what your gunning for, but in my humble opinion a 50 kg plus yellowfin is a far harder proposition than your average 80 -90 kg strippees. Should you be lucky enuf to hook a 50 kg yfin of course but hey are there.
