Hi guys,

Finally got down to Mokau after many work trips previously, this time rod in hand.

By the time I had got there, Dad had already set up around 100m north of access steps of Point Rd. Had nabbed himself a tidy 45cm Kahawhai on second cast.

We fished around 2 hours either side of high tide, but after the first catch, it was mighty quiet. Pillies the choice of bait, rocking Shifted to the river mouth, nada.
Even tried casting a few lures.

Anyone have any luck recently, or suggestions of any other areas to try out?

Thinking next trip will be a kontiki mish closer to seaview motor camp.

Most of the Naki coast are lowtide marks. The out going can be as productive as the incoming. Beach craft and any structure are the important skills, channels, guts and holes all have a role as does the ability to reach and hold your bait in the right place.
This time of the year there tends to be less fish but better ones. Use googlemaps, windy.com to put together when its worth fishing and be prepared to fish marks over a period of time to find out when they do and don't produce.
Not an easy coast to get consistent results but thats one of the real rewards, my last good Snapper,(4.56 kg) on the rod was the only real bite in five hours on a damp day recently but well worth the effort.
