Your thoughts guys on which is a better reel for jigging the Stella 10000 or the 14000. The 14000 has a 6.2:1 retrieve (very fast) and the 10000 a 4.9:1 retrieve. Will the 14000 be abit to fast and hard to work for jigging, especially for an older unfit guy.

I would definitely want a lower ratio or PG model when it some to Spinners and jigging for any length of time, they are harder to use in higher ratio's compared to a high ratio overhead.
A few thing to consider would be can you make do with the higher ratio and have it double up as a top water reel?
What line and capacity are you intending on using? for reel deep stuff on the knolls around White and Mayor for instance you may need the 14000 capacity.

You can do both tasks with either reel but it is like anything - having the right tool for the job makes life easier.
For example I took my 20k and 18k to the islands - the 20 was for jigging but also rigged up for a spare..popping with the 18 is a breeze, the 20 was very hard work in comparison.

The 10 is a very nice sized reel for NZ casting and shallow to intermediate jigging, grunty enough to beast fish with but a bit smaller so it can be used all day...or a good chunk of it.

stella 8000 PG with JM 16000 spool and power handle. Bigger handle makes jigging heaps easier

Not that i am an egg beater guy when it comes to Jigging. But from what i have experienced with my Stella SW 10,000 with Jm 16,000 spool and JM Power Arm and Knob it was actually really fund and not to hard on the body. Mind you it was geared against a 200 gram rod so that soaked up alot of the speed.

The 10,000 (old) retreives 119cm per crank. The 14,000 retrieves 130cm per crank from memory. Best to check the Shimano NZ website

Def the slower reel for the jigging, It will have plenty of speed. I have chucked Aarons 10k on my 200g a couple of times and it was a breeze. I guess it depends where and what depth you wanna use it.
TAS - Its a real disease

OK, so it sounds like the 10000 is the way to go for jigging, what are peoples thoughts about the retrieve rate of this reel for topwater stuff?

i agree with what has been said above.

stella of either size will do the job for either jigging or topwater. but one is mainly a jigging reel, one is mainly a topwater reel.

what do you plan on (or currently are) doing more of, or what is your preference? topwater or jigging?

you can get a topwater reel that can also be used for jigging, or a jigging reel that can also used for topwater.

10000 can do the job for topwater and lots of guys have this as their main topwater reel in nz, but in my opinion not as good for topwater as a 18000 if you also plan on fishing in the islands as well as nz.

TThanks for all the info guys, plus it is actually for my brother who will be doing a mixture of both, but probably more jigging than topwater.

Depends on what type of topwater he wants to do as well.....the higher gear will be good for fast retrieve of poppers(ripping it up)or sinking stick baits but not so important on blooper type poppers or stick baits(surface /sub surface).........If doing stick baits....you are merely retrieving line from the stroke and a lot of stickbaits go sub surface and you need time for the bait to resurface anyway.........high speed is not important for stick baiting in my eyes.....the whole action is pretty relaxed until you get nailed!.....I have been nailed while the bait is still. They often pounce at that time.
I dont like to jig with spin reels...so cant comment there........one thing they all have is grunt in the drag and strong internals...that is very important.Good luckWink
Once the idiots turn up..Im outta here...No time for Drama Queens.

Take the conditions into consideration also...speed may not be required to work the bait for blooping or stick baiting but if you are in a area with current you wont even keep up with the boat drift speed,or if you do you will be working much harder and may not find it so easy to maintain a workable rythm.

Sounds like youre after a jigging reel though,PG model Stella all day - great all rounder for jigging, live bait, pitchbait and casting if required.
