I have used a variety of things to make fly turners over the years, some worked, some didn;t. You can buy little professional jobbies in the US but expense is always a consideration, at least for me.
 
motors from rotisseries, microwaves etc have all been put into action, then someone on a board somewhere gave came up with an idea. I liked it, a quick check on trade me and I had all the bits for less than $30.00 NZ delivered.
 
Motor and base ... mini mirror ball turner.
 
Disc, base from a DVD spindle epoxied onto the shaft on the mirror ball turner. Ethafoam glued to that... plug it in...
 
Voila....
