Hi all this is my first post on this forum so hopefully I get it right. I am considering a new rod to run braid in the 37 kg range . I have read that the Calstar 6455xxh blanks may be old technology but are very effective , how do they compare to the likes of KIlwell Xantu ,live fibre or the Offshore Grand slams . I will probably go carbide guides and roller tip but how do people find using the Aftco wind on guides with braid , is it doable ? I see SHD guides are popular with braid. Any wisdom would be greatly appreciated .

Firstly I am no expert but I offer the following comments.
Calstar blanks have a good reputation. I have 3 or 4 and they have served me well but as you say old technology. I have read that newer blanks have better lifting characteristics and as a result provide more assistance to the angler. Old school again my rods have bigfoot HD Aftco rollers and braid can find its way between the rollers and the guide frame. It is my understanding Aftco have since redesigned the frame of their rollers to prevent this happening however with the range of good quality silicon carbide guides and the like available now days I would go full guides with no roller tip. My reasoning is why introduce anything into a system that can go tits up. The KIS principle applies.

Another vote for Clastar Rods, I have a couple of 6455s an H and an XH. They're great rods. I also have a number of Graphiters, (GF760 M and H's, and a couple of 765s) glass graphite composite and they have **** loads of recoil and lifting ability way more than the 6455s.

I prefer the Graphiters and I'm gobsmacked/stumped why NZ rod builders continue to build Sword rods using 6455s. As I said, great blanks, but there are better options. I think they just get stuck with what they know.

When I lived in the States, some anglers still preferred to fish the eglass blanks with braid because they were softer, particlaryly with shorter (10foot) top shots some fish to get mroe action from their live bait. But the majority fished Graphiters and still do.

The GF760 blanks I like are 6 foot blanks so need to be trimmed at the butt end to fit a Bent butt or Unibutt. I build mine with an 8" hypalon butt, G3 Gimbal, ARS 3M reel seat and 16" foregrip. I'm sure there's a 5.5 foot option the GF755 is one and there's a GF7455 and GF7460 too now which are even stronger rods. I've been told the 755 didn't have much in the way of action, which is not necessarily surprising because if it used the same mandrel as the 655 eglass, then it wouldn't hold a candle to the 7455.

Any new ones I build will most likely have SiC Guides, or perhaps one of the otehr ceramics. My current rods all have Aftco HD rollers. The now do the HD in a "Wind-on" frame with increased clearance for Wind on leaders. The reality is that the extra clearance is needed for the Bimini knot. I should upgrade my rods to Windon HD guides, but can't be arsed, just need to pull the line through the guides when letting lure out. The Bimini knot winds back through no worries.

Right then , I have finally figured out how to reply!! The rod I was looking for needed to be suitable for both marlin and swords using braid. I have spent countless hours reading comments on the virtues of carbide versus rollers , composites versus fibre glass ,custom versus factory made and eventually ended up with a Kilwell Gladiator in 24-37 kg. This one has carbide guides with an Aftco SHD roller.I went with only one roller to minimize braid between roller issues. I haven't measured its lifting power yet but I really like the feel of the blank so hopefully it will do the business. If it does not then I will get something else.
Thanks for everyone's comments I appreciate them all .
