When you are intending to release what the best way to lift kings into the boat when they've got poppers/ stick bait in there mouth?

And also is there a technique used to makes it easier to remove treble?

Only done this with small fish but I'm guessing you don't want to pull the fish in like you do with jigging, grabbing hold of the jig and making sure you got heavy splits.

Do you tend to use a net? Trebles seem to be a nightmare for the net.

Yeah bro, been pondering the same, trebles are messy and stressful. Luckily I don't think my lures are fine tuned enough to effect the action of opting for a bakers rig, better for the fish and better for you.

lip gaff the fish whilst still in the water, then get the hooks out with a set of pliers.
Dont bring em into the boat with those hooks flying all over the place if you can avoid it

Crush all the barbs on your trebles mark or replace with two hooks(electrical tie) under belly and one single hook off the end....or you can use the long style hook removers to take out the trebles...
see attachment
sometimes removing the trebles in favour of single hooks  can effect the action of the lure,so Check em out.

The Berkley Lip Grippers are great for this job, and much kinder on the fish. You still dont have to bring the fish into the boat, as the grippers ( if held correctly Embarrassed) lock down tight on the bottom jaw allowing you to lift the fish to a comfortable height for unhooking

We do what ginga suggested, lip gaff it through the bottom, we use a short wool/hay bale style gaff instead of the traditional long one, works well

we do the same (a short lip gaff) and even go so far as using the gaff to just pull the head out of the water and the other person removes the trebles / hook with some pliers.
If it aint a trophy much better to leave the fish in the water i think. Wanna get some of those lip gaffs though

Yeh bro, old man bound to have few in the shearing shed.

Think my DIY stickbaits will be so uber perfect design that one gram change in treble will change its action so any rig other that trebles will totally kill it

LOLLOLLOLLOLLOLLOLLOLLOL

Cheers for the replies boys, will start out with trebles but if they are making to much of a mess will have to think about using different rigs.

I use my leadering gloves to first take wraps with the left hand the reach down and grab either the lure or bottom jaw and get the lure out there. i dont like lip gaffs but each their own

trebles **** fish up, closed barbs or not as do baker rigs and even singles mid and rear.

Not on yellowfin but still the same on kings. Tuna move too much water when they hit a popper and often send it flying.

If you dont use trebles, baker rigs or singles mid or rear, what does that leave? ie Do you use a single on the back and two in the middle with cable tie?Wink
