While I already have 2 guns on the go, I am thinking of the next challenge. This one will include carbon fibre. Wink

I have never worked with it before and have been doing some research online. I was wondering if someone has any contacts where I can get some off-cut pieces or good pricing. I have found a supplier nearby, but at $50 square meter, it is a bit steep to learn with and do tests.

Any help, information or knowledge is appreciated.

How near is nearby? Im getting some stuff from carboglass in lower hutt for testing out polespear materials and theyre really helpful with the small quantities of rod here and there - 567 9854, if no one answers leave a message and theyll get back to you.

CF is a bit passé. Sure you can't include osmium or something? An osmium-cored 4mm spear would retain velocity pretty well.

BUT it would not handle rocky areas well as per my source: "Osmium is a hard but brittle metal that remains lustrous even at high temperatures."

Are you thinking of building up a foam core then wrapping that or something along those lines?

Try using carbon/kevlar twill - stronger and also much easier to lay up than carbon twill.

just remembered brought some carbon strips/string like from a hobby shop on quay st a few years ago,cannot remember what resins i used though,i know it was not normal polyester, i think i used epoxy/west system resins.i was making masts  from cedar for model yachts.

Dunno where you're gonna get off-cuts of cloth from, manufacturers working with the stuff don't like waste. Also to wrap a barrel you're gonna want a clean piece still on the roll so the weave is not distorted.
A metre of 1.2 wide cloth would go a long way, probably get 2 barrels easy out of that.

Use epoxy resin, for small scale applications it has a lot of advantages over polyester. West systems is very good.

Plain weave carbon cloth and fibreglass cloth are very similar to work with. The main challenge with carbon is you often don't want it hidden under an opaque gelcoat or paint. Twill weave is better than plain weaves for wrapping around curves but the stuff falls apart easy too. Avoid aramid or aramid/carbon blends until you're really comfortable with your layup technique. Thou cannot sand aramid.

The initial thought is to take two similar strips of wood and wrap one with carbon to compare stiffness. Then add another layer, etc. That way I can determine the minimum profile I can make a gun.

Then I would wrap a wood core gun and potentially later do a foam core gun.

That is why I was hoping to find off-cuts - to do the tests where I am not concerned about how it looks.
