2.3 for #16 is perfect IMO as a guide, 2.5 for #14 and 2.8 for #12, depends on the depths you'll be fishing and the pattern / hook style you are tying, this is tungsten slotted referring to here.

Exactly the same, the slot helps them go round grub hooks easier, above sizes are for tying a wing-case over the bead which I prefer to do (mostly cagey browns down here), you can use larger beads if you are tying it up against the eye - there is so many variables.

Flyfisher, I tend to use 2mm for 16's and 2.3mm for 14's, looking for a slim profile fly. Why do you go the slightly bigger option?
Also, how do you make that wingcase over the bead give an even covering over the bead? I have tried it but not that happy with the results.

Cheers

Like to use the smallest fly for the most weight, #16 (Tiemco 4287) black bead Tungsten is about all I use to be honest, I'm not very imaginative when it comes to patterns these days just don't have time to tie much anymore, and I mostly find if a fish won't take a well presented #16 then they generally won't take anything. Will try and grab a pic for you, proportions are prefect IMO with the 2.3 but also tie with the 2.0 sometimes as well, just a Pheasant wing cover, dabbed with SuperGlue for longevity and 'sheen', slim body - never been a fan of beads against eyes on browns, just a personal thing I guess. Cheers.

with beads there are two ways to go and that is undersize or oversize and depends on the depth you want to get so on smaller hooks such as the size 16 i will use a 2ml bead and 14 could be either a 3ml if you are using it as a tag fly or 3.5 if you want to use it on the point to get depth.

i also use sz 12 with 3.5ml for point fly or a size 10 with a size 3.5 or 4ml on the point to get depth.

winter i predominatly use a size 10 on the point and get most of my fish on it

i hope this makes sense. if you need i can break it down a bit further.
