Hey all, going out fishing in the raglan for the first time and was wondering what the ideal sinker weight would be, thanks :)

Hi Claude, there is no real answer to that one. Are you fishing in the harbour or outside the harbour?  In shallow water you wont need anything too heavy. A selection of 1 to 12oz covers most situations

We tend to work on the basis of only just enough weight to reach the bottom and sit where you want. Be it straight down or a stray line out the back... with circle hooks.

So depends much on the current , depth , line weight, bait size etc.

Out the 35 to 6om from Waikato we use 5 and 6oz on ledgers.

And if throw a strayline or random SB out the back if bored .. had a 1oz on it... Much to our surprise caught a nice gurnard.

I just saw this. If anchored you need to hold the bottom. I'd go 4oz minimum, 8oz is better. Gets down fast.  You can use 100g jigs as well if drifting or the current isn't too much.

I usually put out the sea anchor and drifted, even at 50m. I usually caught some, but anchoring is better apparently. I was just not willing to haul up the anchor 50m or so.

Should add , also depends on the experiance of the other guys and how many..
Rule of thumb is light enought to hold the bottom.. but do that with several lines, one unattended, fish on, tide change boat turns in the wind and will quickly go around the other lines.. mess
Out around the 35 to 55m marks I use around 5 to 6 oz... enough to hold almost vertical.
Other experience also...
non experienced I put a 8oz on.. keeps their line vertical without choice, and slows,a little, any fish they hook.

Get a tangle, not only is it a pain, but no line in the water not fishing , not fishing not catching...Wink

I was just not willing to haul up the anchor 50m or so.

I had to do it a couple trips back.. a poor contact inside the capatain pressure switch..
In not fit , no nor a big guy.. hover around 77kg...9m of chain, 3mX  8mm 6m X 6mm 4.5kg danford.
helm moved to boat up the current so could take the slack out easy..
Bit more pressure as the anchor shaft turned over the blades and rolled free.. Bot moves back in current so take that slack up and anchor off the bottom.
 Straight 55m up.
To be honest thought would take far more effort but no.. actually comes up slightly faster than with the capstan.
The 'hard part' was  thinking " when will this end, with a pictre in my mind dragging the anchor down our old 50mm drive way thinking about maybe where it is.. to fill in the time pulling up
To be honest was rather disappointed in the lack of actual effort required.
My old man in the 50s 60s , had tape on thru the  warp threads every fathom.. can count off and reduce the bordum pulling up maybe?

Grab yourself one of these OWT - anchor warp just needs to be spliced to the chain not shackled. Attach a buoy to the top, slide the anchor warp under the W clip at the bottom, throw the whole lot over the side, & drive upwind for 100m or so. The water drag on the buoy results in the warp & chain all passing through the clip & once it is all up you just have to drift back downwind recovering warp as you go. Clever bit of kit. You can also get away with just using a shackle instead of the clip - just make sure it is big enough for the chain to pass through. The buoy should hang off the shackle pin with the warp running through the bow so you don't undo the shackle.
